In a post on social network X, Mr. Prevot announced that Belgium will participate in signing the New York Declaration, paving the way for a two-state solution - a Palestinian state that coexists peacefully with Israel.
This move by Belgium aims to increase international pressure on Israel following similar moves by Australia, the UK, Canada and France.
Mr. Prevot emphasized that this decision was made in response to the ongoing humanitarian tragedy in Palestine, especially in Gaza, and was in response to the acts of violence caused by Israel in violation of international law.
Belgium will also impose 12 " strong" sanctions on Israel, such as banning imports of products from their settlements, reviewing public procurement policies with Israeli companies and declaring Hamas leaders unpopular in Belgium, Mr. Prevot said.
Mr. Prevot affirmed that Belgium - a member of the European Union (EU) - has made this decision to promote Israel and Hamas to actively negotiate to resolve the issue.
Palestinians have long sought a state in the West Bank and the Israeli-occupied Gaza Strip. The US has always said that such a state can only be founded through direct negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians.
In 2024, the United Nations' highest court ruled that Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories, including the West Bank and its settlements, was illegal and should withdraw as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, Israel stated that these territories were not legally occupied because they were located in disputed territory, but the United Nations and most of the international community considered them occupied territories.
In response to the growing global criticism of the war in Gaza, Israel also expressed dissatisfaction with the official commitments to recognize a Palestinian state at a UN summit.
