A 7.7 Richter earthquake rocked northwest of Sagaing, Myanmar at 13:20 on March 28, 2025, the Geological Survey said.
The center of the earthquake was located at a depth of 10 km, initially determined to be at latitude 22.01 degrees north and longitude 95.92 degrees east.
According to a reporter from Xinhua News Agency in Yangon, Myanmar, the aftershocks were strongly felt in the capital Naypyidaw and the largest city of Yangon.
So far, the Myanmar government has not released any information about the intensity of the earthquake or the extent of damage. The efforts of Tan Hoa Xa reporters to contact the shocked area were all unsuccessful.
Several buildings in the Mandalay region collapsed and several roads between Mandalay and Yangon were damaged and broken.
After the earthquake, reporters from Xinhua News Agency in the capital Vientiane of Laos and Bangkok, Thailand, said that strong aftershocks were also felt in these areas.
In Vientiane, buildings 3 floors higher have shook significantly, residents in high-rise buildings feel the fierce shaking in their homes.
The China earthquake Network Center (CENC) assessed the 7.9 Richter earthquake as strong. People felt the shaking in many areas of Yunnan province, southwestern China, bordering Myanmar.
