The latest typhoon information from the Hong Kong Meteorological Station (China) on November 9 said that the station will broadcast a level 1 storm warning signal with typhoon No. 14 Fung-wong at noon on November 10.
Forecasters said Typhoon Fung-wong is moving towards Luzon, Philippines before entering the East Sea on November 10, then turning north, towards the vicinity of Taiwan (China).
"The typhoon will be closest to Hong Kong (China) on November 12, about 400km east of Hong Kong (China). The local wind will strengthen by the end of November 11 and November 12" - the bulletin stated.
Fung-wong means Phuong Hoang in Quang Dong language. Typhoon Fung-wong is currently a super typhoon, about 310km east of Manila, Philippines.
Under the combined impact of Typhoon Fung-wong and monsoon, the weather forecast agency said that there will be strong winds, large waves and cooler weather in the coastal area of Guangdong, China, in the next few days.
Temperatures are expected to drop to around 20 degrees Celsius in urban areas of Hong Kong (China) by midweek.
Typhoon Fung-wong is expected to approach Taiwan (China) and gradually weaken due to the influence of the northeast monsoon by the end of next week.
According to the latest typhoon forecast from the National Meteorological Center, due to the combined influence of the monsoon and Typhoon Fung-wong, from the night of November 9 to the morning of November 10, the sea is expected to be very rough in the northern and central East Sea, with waves 6 to 9m high.
The Taiwan Strait and the sea east of Taiwan (China) are forecast to have large to very large waves, 3-5m high; the coastal waters of Fujian will see waves from 2.5-3.8m, while the coastal waters of southern Zhejiang and eastern Guangdong will see waves from 2-3m.
The latest storm information from the US Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) on November 9 said that Typhoon Fung-wong is in a complex wind zone between two subtropical high pressure blocks in the next 24 hours, causing the storm to move mainly west-northwest.
In the next 1.5 to 3 days, Typhoon Fung-wong will begin to change direction to the northeast. The center of the storm is expected to make landfall in Taiwan (China), then continue moving northeast for the rest of the forecast period.
The storm that preceded Typhoon No. 14 in the East Sea is forecast to gradually weaken due to terrain interaction with the northern Philippines. Super typhoon Fung-wong will continue to lose intensity after passing Luzon Island in the next 12 to 24 hours.
JTWC forecasters also said that strong wind shear and dry air mass from the northeast monsoon will continue to affect the storm structure as Typhoon Fung-wong moves.
Typhoon Fung-wong is forecast to gradually dissipate over land after 4 days due to increasingly strong terrain. As it passes through the mountains of central Taiwan (China), the storm will weaken into a low pressure area, continuing to reduce its intensity as it moves out to sea on the 5th day of the forecast period.
