Iran denies negotiations with the US

Iran insists it is only negotiating with Oman on the maritime route, contrary to the US President's previous statement on a new negotiation schedule.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry said on August 3 that there are currently no negotiations with the US, but negotiations are underway with Oman on the management of the strategic Hormuz Strait, AFP reported.

We are not currently negotiating with the US. Our negotiations are with Oman to ensure travel through the Strait of Hormuz," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said at a regular press conference.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said new talks with Iran would begin on August 3, US time, after he decided to postpone attacks on Iran to pursue an agreement to end the war entering its sixth month.

Mr. Trump told reporters on August 2 that the talks would address the Hormuz Strait, the global energy supply route that has become a key point in the deadlock in the conflict, and finally the issue of Iran's denuclearization.

For its part, Iran said it is about to reach an agreement with Oman on a new route across the strait, where a tanker reported an explosion nearby on August 2, showing the persistent instability of this strategic waterway.
