According to Reuters, an Israeli airstrike on a school used as a shelter in the Gaza Strip city of Deir Al-Balah on October 10 killed at least 28 people and injured 54 others. Among the victims were women and children.
The city of Deir Al-Balah appears to no longer be a safe haven for around 1 million Gazans as the Israeli army has intensified its assault on the enclave in recent weeks. Three hospitals in Deir Al-Balah were told to evacuate patients following the airstrikes on October 10.
Hospital director Kamal Adwan said it would be difficult to evacuate patients there, including eight seriously injured children, with fuel running low.
The Israeli military accused Hamas of using civilian shelters as military bases and weapons storage areas, a claim Hamas immediately denied.
Last week, Israel began massing troops into the northern Gaza city of Jabalia, which is considered one of Gaza's largest refugee areas.
Israel claimed to have killed 12 Hamas militants in a ground operation in Jabalia but did not provide any evidence.
Although the Israeli military has called on people to evacuate the attacked areas, about 400,000 people are still trapped, according to the United Nations.
Palestinian health officials say about 130 people have been killed in Israeli attacks on humanitarian areas in recent weeks.
