The coaching staff of the Vietnam Athletics Team decided to register Nguyen Thi Oanh to participate in 3 events at the 33rd SEA Games including 3,000m hurdles, 5,000m and 10,000m.
The decision to register the event was confirmed by countries at a technical meeting before the track and field competition held in Bangkok (Thailand) on the morning of December 10.
Previously, many predictions said that Nguyen Thi Oanh would participate in all 4 events including 1,500m, 3,000m hurdles, 5,000m and 10,000m. However, the registration content of athletes was carefully prepared by the Training Board to maintain the results as set.
At the 32nd SEA Games held in Cambodia 2 years ago, Nguyen Thi Oanh won 4 gold medals in the events of 1,500m, 3,000m hurdles, 5,000m and 10,000m. With the decision to participate in only 3 events, Nguyen Thi Oanh will not have the opportunity to defend 4 gold medals at the 33rd SEA Games.
However, the top goal of the Vietnam Athletics Team is to maintain the medal achievements in the event that Nguyen Thi Oanh participated in.
The Vietnam Athletics Team officially registered 50 athletes to participate in 38 events at the 33rd SEA Games. At the technical meeting, the representative of the Vietnam Athletics Team's coaching staff announced the withdrawal of striker Nguyen Hoai Van due to injury.
The 33rd SEA Games Athletics will start competing from the morning of December 11 at Supachalasai National Stadium (Bangkok, Thailand).
