According to the plan, on the morning of April 28, the People's Council of An Giang province, term X, 2021-2026, will open the 29th session (special session) to consider and decide to adjust the way of naming 36 communes and wards after the merger, which were previously named after district-level areas associated with the East, West, South, North and Central regions.
It is known that previously, at the 19th Provincial Party Executive Committee Conference, term XI held on April 18, 2025, it was agreed to reduce commune-level administrative units in the whole province to 54 units, reaching a reduction of 65.15% of the total number of commune-level administrative units before the reorganization. Including 44 communes and 10 wards.
After that, the names of the newly merged communes and wards are expected to be given according to 2 principles: keeping the previously placed names (18 units) and re-ghosting them according to the district-level units attached to the units (36 units). Typically, Long Xuyen city has Long Xuyen, Long Xuyen Dong, Long Xuyen Tay wards and My Hoa Hung commune; or Phu Tan district has Phu Tan monopoly and Phu Tan associated with the Central, Eastern, Western, Southern and Northern regions.

The naming associated with the status has made many voters wonder and recommend that the province consider adjusting according to the orientation associated with the traditional, historical and cultural values typical of each locality.
On that basis, on April 24, 2025, the Standing Committee of the An Giang Provincial Party Committee will convene a meeting of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Party Committee to carefully study, review and consider the plan to name communes and wards in An Giang province before officially submitting it to the Provincial People's Council for consideration and decision.

In that spirit, agreed to keep the 18 names of communes and wards that were previously named based on the traditional values, associated with the typical history and culture of the localities. Adjust the name of the remaining 36 communes and wards (named after the district level associated with the azimuth), according to the principle of closely following the traditional values, history and cultural typical localities and does not coincide with the names of the administrative unit of the same level within the provincial administrative unit after merging with Kien Giang province.
It is expected that the names of communes and wards in this adjustment will be built according to the principle of based on traditional values, associated with the history and typical culture of the locality. Thus, Long Xuyen city has 3 wards: Long Xuyen, Binh Duc, My Thoi and My Hoa Hung commune. Similarly, Phu Tan district has Phu Tan, Phu An, Binh Thanh Dong, Cho Vam, Hoa Lac and Phu Lam communes.
