The establishment of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army on September 7, 1945 was a historic event marking the legitimate growth of the Vietnam Revolutionary Army.
After the resistance war against colonialism, the General Staff has been trained, challenged and increasingly grown, truly becoming a command and strategic advisory agency of our Army. From directing the development of guerrilla warfare, gradually promoting the war movement, building a large third-old armed force.
Important victories such as the Border Campaign of 1950 and the Winter-Spring War of 1953-1954 which culminated in a strategic decisive battle in Dien Bien Phu demonstrated the strategic talent of the BTTM.

In the resistance war against the US, the General Staff focused on directing the construction of a Northern transition from wartime to peacetime; developing a defense plan to protect the North; and implementing the rectification and unification of the entire army in organization, equipment, and regular training.
The great victories that changed the situation, created a decisive turning point on the battlefield, especially the victory of the General Offensive and Uprising in the Spring of 1975, culminating in the historic Ho Chi Minh Campaign, demonstrated the strategic talent of the General Staff in advising the Politburo, the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defense to make correct, accurate and timely strategic decisions.
During the period of building and defending the Fatherland, the General Staff advised the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defense to direct the shift of strategy from wartime to peacetime; from construction and combat tasks to combat readiness and participation in labor production and national construction; building a national defense foundation, a national defense posture to protect the Fatherland. In particular, he advised, directed, and commanded our army and people to win victories in the battles to protect the Fatherland.
