Japan wants to strengthen defense and security cooperation with Vietnam

Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru welcomed the establishment of a 2+2 Dialogue mechanism at the Deputy Foreign and Defense Ministers' level.

On April 28, at the Presidential Palace, Politburo member and President Luong Cuong received Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru, who is on an official visit to Vietnam from April 27 to 29.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the reception, President Luong Cuong expressed his pleasure at witnessing the two countries' relations developing substantially, comprehensively and effectively in all fields and achieving many new advances, outstanding results after nearly 2 years of upgrading the relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for peace and prosperity in Asia and the world.

The President affirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to its relationship with Japan, supports Japan in promoting its increasingly active role, and contributes to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

The President believes that Prime Minister Ishiba's visit this time will open a new stage of development in bilateral relations in a more chatulent and effective direction, meeting the interests of the people of the two countries, contributing to cooperation and development in the region.

Prime Minister Ishiba thanked President Luong Cuong for his warm and warm welcome and was delighted to meet the President again during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit Week in Peru in November 2024 and to visit Vietnam again after 35 years at the time Vietnam is organizing activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the South, national reunification and witnessing the great changes of Vietnam.

Prime Minister Ishiba affirmed that Japan will continue to accompany and support Vietnam in building an independent and self-reliant economy, realizing the goals of becoming a developing country with modern industry, high average income and a developed country with high income by 2045.

Emphasizing the importance of defense and security cooperation, Prime Minister Ishiba welcomed the announcement of the establishment of a 2+2 Dialogue mechanism at the Deputy Foreign and Defense Ministers' level and expressed his wish that the two countries would further strengthen defense and security cooperation. President Luong Cuong suggested that the two sides effectively implement the signed cooperation agreements, while promoting and exchanging new cooperation contents.

President Luong Cuong said that economic cooperation between the two countries still has much room to be promoted, suggesting that the two sides deepen economic, trade and investment cooperation, promote science and technology cooperation, implement specific cooperation projects in new areas such as digital transformation, green transformation, high-quality human resource training, semiconductors, AI, ...; support Vietnam in improving climate change response capacity; promote high-tech agricultural cooperation.

Appreciating the positive contributions to Japan of the 630,000-km community of Vietnamese people in Japan, Prime Minister Ishiba affirmed that the Japanese Government will continue to support and create favorable conditions for Vietnamese people to live, study and work in Japan; wish to further promote people-to-people and cultural exchanges between the two countries.

On this occasion, Chairman Luong Cuong respectfully invited the King and Queen of Japan to soon visit Vietnam.
