The Standing Committee of the Yen Bai Provincial Party Committee has just agreed on a plan to arrange 146 communes, 12 wards, 10 towns in the area into 36 communes and 5 new wards. Thus, Yen Bai province currently has 168 communes and wards, but it is expected that there will be only 41 communes and wards.
The arrangement plan is based on the criteria and orientations of the Politburo, according to the expected guidance of the Government Party Committee, central departments, ministries, and branches and the direction of the Provincial Party Committee and the Standing Committee of the Yen Bai Provincial Party Committee.
Accordingly, for commune-level administrative units, the minimum natural area is 150 km2. Population size requires 15,000 people or more. For mountainous and highland communes with over 50% of the population being ethnic minorities, the minimum is 7,500 people. For ward-level administrative units, the minimum natural area is 35 km2. Population size requires 35,000 people or more.
In addition, the arrangement is calculated on the basis of ensuring the harmony of historical, cultural, ethnic, religious, belief and customs of each locality. At the same time, factors such as geographical location, natural conditions, regional linkages, economic development level, national defense - security, and transport infrastructure were also carefully considered.

Yen Bai city merged with Phu Thinh commune in Yen Binh district and 2 communes Minh Quan, Cuong Thinh commune in Tran Yen district to reorganize into 3 new wards: Nguyen Thai Hoc ward (including 7 old commune and ward units), Dong Tam ward (including 5 old commune and ward units) and Yen Bai ward (including 5 old commune and ward units).
The project to reorganize commune-level administrative units will be developed by Yen Bai province and submitted to the Government and the Ministry of Home Affairs according to detailed roadmaps and completed before June 30.
At the same time, the Standing Committee of the Yen Bai Provincial Party Committee also requested agencies under the People's Committee of Yen Bai province to closely follow the instructions of the Government and the Ministry of Home Affairs, ensuring all steps according to regulations, completing the completion of the district-level administrative unit before June 30.
