On the morning of September 21, Politburo member and President Luong Cuong and his wife, along with the Vietnamese high-ranking delegation, set off to attend the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) High-Level Session, combined with bilateral activities in the US from September 21 to 24, 2025.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dang Hoang Giang said that the working trip of the President has a special meaning with many goals both bilateral and multilateral.
From a multilateral perspective, the working trip of the President coincided with the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and the 80th anniversary of the National Day of Vietnam. The visit aims to continue implementing Vietnam's foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, diversification, multilateralization, proactiveness, active, comprehensive, extensive and effective international integration.
Through the visit, Vietnam will convey the message of affirming its role as a responsible member of the United Nations, proactively participating and actively and substantially contributing to the activities and major priorities of the United Nations and the international community, at the right time when the United Nations needs and expects support and companionship through the words and actions of key countries such as Vietnam.
For nearly 50 years, the cooperative relationship between Vietnam and the LHQ has become a strong partnership. Vietnam has chaired many initiatives that were very successful, very timely, welcomed and highly appreciated by the VFF and the international community such as International Day for Disease Prevention and Control (December 27); International Day of entertainment (June 11)...
In recent years, Vietnam has held many important positions in the United Nations' leading agencies on peace, security, and the law, ensuring the promotion of human rights and culture. In particular, in more than 10 years of participating in the United Nations peacekeeping force, Vietnam has also sent nearly 1,500 officers and soldiers to join the United Nations peacekeeping force in South Sudan, the Central African Republic and in the Abyei area between Sudan and South Sudan.
Deputy Minister Dang Hoang Giang said that in the context of multilateralism and the United Nations facing many challenges, Vietnam is expected to be a partner actively promoting multilateral cooperation with the United Nations, playing a central role, and being considered a model for effective cooperation with the United Nations.
On the bilateral level, the President's visit took place on the occasion of Vietnam and the US celebrating the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, an opportunity for both Vietnam and the US to look back on the 3-decade journey from former friends to partners, comprehensive partners, and comprehensive strategic partners, while building a roadmap to continue implementing sustainably, effectively and substantially the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework.
It is expected that the two sides will continue to promote the fundamental principles of relations, including respect for the United Nations Charter, international law and respect for each other's political institutions, independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, further enhancing political trust and strategic trust, mutually beneficial cooperation, bringing practical benefits to the people of the two countries, as well as actively contributing to peace, stability, prosperity and sustainable development in the region and the world, without harming the legitimate interests of the parties involved.
Accordingly, the President will have meetings with US leaders, receive businesses, financial institutions, long-time partners, and top scholars, and chair the 80th Anniversary of Vietnam in New York to affirm the policy of attaching importance to further developing relations with the US, especially in the fields of economy, trade, investment, science and technology; promote the implementation of agreements and commitments between the two countries' senior leaders; mobilize the support of all classes for Vietnam and the Vietnam - US relationship, demonstrating the Party and State's concern for the Vietnamese community in the US.
