Causes and forecasts
Explaining the sharp drop in silver prices in recent sessions, Bart Melek - CEO and Head of Global Commodity Strategy at TD Securities - said that the main reason is the "gamma squeeze" phenomenon - a phenomenon where prices can change quickly and strongly because marketmakers have to continuously buy or sell underlying assets to hedge against risks when investors flock to trade options.
This phenomenon has now temporarily ended. We see significant participation of individual investors in the options market, especially buying buy options for silver ETF funds.
This has forced market regulators to buy physical silver to hedge against risks, especially when the market is lacking liquidity and inventories are limited, thereby increasing the situation of price cuts" - he explained.
He also pointed out the emergence of high leverage funds: "Then, unfavorable information appeared, when President Trump revealed that he was considering nominating Kevin Warsh for the Fed Chairman position. Warsh is seen as having a tougher stance on the inflation issue, weakening expectations for monetary easing policy.
Regarding the impact of clarifying tariff policies, Mr. Melek said that this is a factor that the market is paying special attention to.
If there is an agreement in June, in which tariffs are adjusted or postponed, metal inventories in the US - including copper and silver - may change. The market may be "relaxed" significantly, thereby reducing the scarcity factors that pushed prices to record highs" - Bart Melek said.
