The project to build the Thunder Monument on Road 5 will be implemented from 2023 in Tuan Viet commune, Kim Thanh district, Hai Duong province with a total investment of 55.5 billion VND, invested by the Hai Duong Provincial Investment Project Management Board.
The Thunder Monument on Road 5 is over 21m high and made entirely of natural stone.
According to recorded documents, Thunder on Route 5 was a resistance movement against French colonialism on Route 5 and the Hai Phong - Hanoi railway by the army and people of 3 provinces: Hai Phong, Hai Duong, Hung Yen.
After the success of the August Revolution, the French colonialists returned to invade our country for the second time. They realized that this was the most important artery in the Northern battlefield, so they set up many posts and watchtowers, launched many patrols and sweeps along Route 5 and surrounding areas, committing many crimes against our people.
Realizing that Route 5 and the Hai Phong - Hanoi railway have a strategic and important position, during the resistance war against French colonialism, the army and people of Hai Duong, along with Hai Phong and Hung Yen, fought steadfastly, clinging to their land and villages, destroying each enemy.
With the slogan "Non-stop gunfire, non-stop mines on Route 5 to coordinate with Dien Bien Phu", the army and people of Hai Duong organized many mine attacks, contributing to the depletion of enemy forces, weapons and vehicles on Route 5, preventing enemy support for the Dien Bien Phu battlefield.
The most typical of the Thunder on Route 5 movement was the battle using "manned electric mines" to destroy reinforcements on Route 5 at Pham Xa Station (Kim Thanh) on the night of January 31, 1954. The battle killed 1,017 enemies and overturned a 21-car train carrying soldiers and military equipment.
According to the Hai Duong Province Investment Project Management Board, the Thunder Monument on Route 5 was built to commemorate and honor soldiers and guerrillas who sacrificed their lives in campaigns on Route 5 and the Hanoi - Hai Phong railway, contributing to the cause of national liberation.
In addition, the project also aims to create a place for people to commemorate, visit and explore the heroic feats of our army and people.
Currently, the construction unit has completed about 90% of the project, expected to be completed on December 9.
