Lao Cai - The flash flood that occurred overnight caused the destruction of Nghe Dong Village, Khe Dom Village, Phong Du Ha Commune.

On September 29, people in Ngeng village, Khe Dom village, Phong Du Ha commune suffered an unprecedented and terrifying flash flood.

The small village is more than 13 km from the commune center with 14 Red Dao households, which is a peaceful land. There has never been a flood here, but after just a few minutes of unusual storms, the whole village became devastated.

At around 6pm on September 29, people in Ngung village saw the stream water suddenly rising rapidly, the flow was rolling, accompanied by many unusual signs.

Thanks to vigilance, households were able to tell each other to move to high areas to avoid flooding. But less than ten minutes later, the fierce water collapsed, sweeping everything away.

Three solid houses were completely washed away, and more than ten others were buried and severely damaged by mud, trees, and rocks.

All the livestock, poultry, along with food, money, and items that the people have accumulated up to now have been swept away by the water in a flash.

The flood passed, leaving a devastated Ngung village, with only mud left, ruined roofs and the indignant eyes of the people.

With no more housing, people were forced to leave the village and move to the center of Khe Dom village to stay in the homes of brothers and relatives.

From a peaceful village by a small stream of the Red Dao people, Ngong village is now just a place of black, cold mud.

Mr. Ban Tien Ly sat in shock looking at the old village, his voice choked up: "Since our ancestors built the village, there has never been a flood in Ngung village. But that night, the rain kept pouring down, looking down at the stream and seeing the water rising rapidly and flowing unusually strongly, I quickly urged my wife and children to run to a high place to safety.

After just a few minutes, the flood swept away all the houses and properties. The money from selling cinnamon for more than 230 million VND was also swept away by the fierce flood. In the process, I and many households here became penniless and lost everything".

On October 2, speaking with Lao Dong, Mr. Tran Duc Thinh - Vice Chairman of Phong Du Ha Commune People's Committee - said: This is the first and also the heaviest flash flood ever in Ngeng village. Property damage cannot be counted yet, but fortunately, people were evacuated in time, without any human casualties.

Immediately after the incident, the commune mobilized police forces, militia, and youth unions to the scene to support people in moving the remaining assets. At the same time, visit, encourage and review and count the damage to have timely support plans.

In the coming days, local authorities will urgently coordinate with the province to arrange temporary accommodation; at the same time, propose emergency support for food and necessities for the people.

Mr. Tran Duc Thinh emphasized: "In the immediate future, the top priority is to stabilize the lives of 14 households, not leaving people without food or accommodation, especially when winter is approaching".

It is known that Ngung village is one of the particularly difficult areas of Phong Du Ha commune, Lao Cai province.

Before the flood, people's lives mainly depended on farming, small-scale livestock farming, and unstable income.
