Can Tho adjusts planning after merger

PHƯƠNG ANH |

Can Tho - The City People's Committee issued a plan to adjust the Planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050 after the arrangement of administrative units.

Accordingly, the adjustment aims to ensure legality, remove difficulties and obstacles in implementing the current planning, while restructuring development space, optimizing resources and promoting the potential and advantages of the city.

Can Tho is oriented to become a national growth axis, playing a role as a driving force for spreading and leading the development of the Mekong Delta region, with a synchronous, modern infrastructure system, adapting to climate change, towards a smart, green, sustainable and unique city.

The scope of planning adjustment includes the entire natural area of Can Tho after the merger, integrating previous planning of Can Tho city, Soc Trang and Hau Giang. The preparation, appraisal and approval work is expected to be completed in 2025. After being approved, the adjusted plan will be widely announced for practical implementation.

Previously, the People's Committee of Can Tho City submitted Document No. 96 to the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Construction on requesting a policy to establish a general planning for Can Tho City.

After the merger, Can Tho city has an area of 6,360.83 km2 and a population of more than 4.1 million people, bordering the provinces of An Giang, Dong Thap, Ca Mau, Vinh Long and the East Sea.

On the basis of the new legal basis, Can Tho City is identified as an urban area directly under the Central Government. However, the current planning status is still not synchronous: The old Can Tho is still in effect with the general planning until 2030, with a vision to 2050, while the merged area from Soc Trang and Hau Giang does not have a corresponding urban and rural planning because previously the plans had been integrated into the provincial planning according to the 2017 Planning Law.

Therefore, the People's Committee of Can Tho City proposed that the Prime Minister approve the policy of establishing a General Plan, with a planning period of 20-25 years, with a vision to 50 years, for the entire administrative boundary of the new Can Tho City. The planning will be prepared by the City People's Committee, appraised by the Ministry of Construction, and capital from the state budget, and implemented in 2025.
