The Tan Ky - Tan Quy bridge project was approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee in 2017 and officially started construction in early 2018 under the BOT (build - operate - transfer) form.
The bridge spans the Tham Luong - Ben Cat canal, is 385 m long, including an 83 m main bridge with 4 lanes and a sidewalk, and two approach roads at both ends of the bridge.
At the time of commencement, the total investment of the project was 312 billion VND. However, when including interest and costs waiting for BOT toll collection, the total investment capital was adjusted to 668 billion VND.
By the end of 2018, the project had to stop due to difficulties in site clearance and regulations of Resolution 437 of the National Assembly (prohibiting BOT projects on existing roads).
After many years of stagnation, in June 2024, the project was restarted when Ho Chi Minh City decided to change the investment form from BOT to using budget capital, with the total adjusted capital being nearly 500 billion VND. Of which, more than 204 billion VND was used to pay the old BOT investor.
According to the HCM City Traffic Construction Investment Management Board (investor), the project has only completed about 20% of the work volume.
The main bridge is expected to be completed and open to traffic in January 2025, later than the planned opening at the end of this year.
One of the major obstacles at present is the relocation of the medium and low voltage grid system and transformer stations at both ends of the bridge.
Although the site was handed over by Binh Tan district in October, the process of relocating the power grid is still slow due to the lack of agreement between the investor and the electricity industry.
Tan Ky - Tan Quy Bridge plays an important role in solving traffic congestion in the western area of Ho Chi Minh City, especially on the main road connecting the three districts of Binh Tan, Tan Binh and Tan Phu with the city center. The project is also synchronized with the plan to expand Tan Ky - Tan Quy road, contributing to eliminating the long-standing "bottleneck".
Not only improving traffic, the Tan Ky - Tan Quy bridge project also has significance in urban beautification. When completed, the bridge, together with the Tham Luong - Ben Cat canal renovation project, will help expand drainage space and enhance waterway traffic for the area.
