According to the report of the Ministry of Construction on the planning of the railway line connecting Tan Son Nhat airport and Long Thanh airport, there are 2 routes as follows:
- Urban railway line No. 6 connects Tan Son Nhat airport with Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line (Phu Huu intersection). Then, the infrastructure of the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line connecting to Long Thanh airport will be shared; the investment roadmap before 2030.
- Urban railway line No. 2 connects Tan Son Nhat airport to Thu Thiem station. Then follow the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line to connect with Long Thanh airport; investment roadmap before 2030.
Currently, the Ho Chi Minh City planning has identified urban railway line 6 and urban railway line 2 invested by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee; the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh line is the urban railway being invested by the Ministry of Construction.
Regarding the implementation of investment preparation for railway lines, the Ministry of Construction said that the Ministry is taking the lead in preparing investment for the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh route, an urban railway line, about 42 km long, designed with double track, 1435 mm road gauge, designed speed of 120 km/h, 20 stations, transporting domestic and suburban passengers from Ho Chi Minh City to Long Thanh airport; The total estimated investment is about 3.5 billion USD.
Currently, the Ministry of Construction is completing the Pre-Feasibility Study Report to submit to the National Assembly for approval of the investment policy in October 2025.
Ho Chi Minh City houses urban railway line No. 2, Ben Thanh - Tham Luong section. The project has been approved by the competent authority for the Feasibility Study Report, expected to start construction in December 2025.
The Ben Thanh - Thu Thiem section and the Tham Luong - Cu Chi section; Urban railway line 6 is not yet ready for investment. According to Resolution No. 188/2025/QH15 dated February 19, 2025 of the National Assembly, this project will be completed by 2035.
In order to soon deploy the connecting route between Tan Son Nhat airport and Long Thanh airport, ensuring unity and synchronization, the Ministry of Construction proposed that the Prime Minister assign the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee as the managing agency to invest in the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh urban railway project, to soon complete the connection plan between the two airports.
Assign the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to work and agree with the Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee on assigning the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee as the project's governing body to report to the Prime Minister for decision according to the provisions of Article 30 of the Law on Public Investment.
In case of being assigned as the competent authority, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee will receive all the existing research results of the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh urban railway project to continue implementing investment preparation and implementation.
Allow the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to study the addition of the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line to the Ho Chi Minh City urban railway planning and propose the Government to consider and approve the addition of the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway line to the project list attached to Resolution No. 188/2025/QH15 dated February 19, 2025 of the National Assembly.
