More than 4,600 pigs destroyed
African swine fever (DTLCP) is showing signs of a strong outbreak in Quang Tri province. According to a report from the Department of Agriculture and Environment, after just over 2 months of the outbreak, the whole province recorded 66 outbreaks, forcing the destruction of over 4,600 sick pigs.
The damage does not stop at the number of livestock but also the assets and efforts of hundreds of households, many of whom have lost everything and are left penniless.
Mr. Hoang Nam - Permanent Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Tri province said that the epidemic situation is complicated due to the characteristics of small-scale livestock farming, making it difficult to control the epidemic. Meanwhile, people's awareness of epidemic prevention is still limited, there is still a phenomenon of arbitrarily slaughtering, transporting, and littering the environment.
Faced with that reality, the province has strongly directed the commune level, requiring localities to urgently establish an epidemic prevention Steering Committee; set up 24/7 checkpoints at epidemic locations; and at the same time arrange quick response teams to promptly isolate and destroy according to technical procedures.

The Provincial People's Committee has requested the Department of Agriculture and Environment to coordinate with localities to review the total herd, monitor epidemics, and organize the destruction of sick pigs in accordance with regulations. The Department of Finance is assigned to arrange advance budgets for localities to serve epidemic prevention and control. The Department of Health reviews and prepares protective equipment and disinfection at outbreaks.
"The most important thing at this time is not to let the epidemic spread to districts that have not yet had the epidemic, especially areas with large pigs and many farms," the Vice Chairman of the province emphasized.
Timely support for re-ensuring
In parallel with epidemic control, Quang Tri province also sets a task of supporting people to regenerate after the epidemic. Accordingly, livestock households with destroyed pigs will be supported in accordance with the provisions of Decree 116/2025/ND-CP of the Government. The Provincial People's Committee has directed the Department of Finance to urgently appraise and disburse support funds according to the plan to simplify procedures and shorten payment time.
According to the Standing Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Tri province, the province not only wants to control the epidemic but also helps people restore production. The province will support all breeds, capital and techniques, especially for poor and near-poor households so that people can rest assured to re-herd after the epidemic is controlled.
According to the recommendation of the agricultural sector, people should absolutely not arbitrarily re-herd without being inspected and assessed by competent authorities for biosafety conditions. Localities must closely coordinate with veterinary agencies, organize breeding inspections, and monitor the environment before re-herding.
Notably, Quang Tri has launched a strong propaganda campaign to the people about identification signs, epidemic prevention methods and regulations for handling pigs.
