Cup dong changes after 45 years of peace at the border

Tân Văn |

After 45 years of peace in the border area, Dong Cup hamlet (Hung Dao commune, Cao Bang city) has clearly changed. The roads have been concreted, the fields that were destroyed by bullets are now lush with rice, corn, and cultivated all year round.

Don't forget history

Hamlet head Dam The Chinh shared: "The whole hamlet has 138 households with about 600 people, the poor household has only 3 households". Returning to Dong Cup in the early days of the new year, it is easy to see high-rise buildings growing close together, 100% of residents in the concentrated area have solid and sturdy houses; offices and administrative agencies, medical, educational and cultural facilities are all invested in upgrading; banking and postal services, telecommunications, and transportation are developed.

Previously, Dong Cup hamlet in Hoa An district was merged into Cao Bang city. This is considered a new opportunity for economic development, stimulating local motivations.

Talking to reporters, a representative of the Hung Dao Commune Party Committee said: "Dong Cup is a place rich in revolutionary traditions, after historical events, the people here are developing their economy, changing the face of the countryside every day".

Dong Cup hamlet owns about 40 hectares of land for cultivation and agricultural cultivation. With a tradition of studiousness, the rate of households in the hamlet with children studying high and escaping poverty to make ends meet accounts for about 30-40%. Many households have purchased cars, machinery, and large agricultural tools to serve economic production.

Turning pain into revival strength

Dong Cup hamlet has now met the new rural standards and is a typical example not only of Hung Dao commune, but also of Cao Bang city. In addition to Dong Cup, the infrastructure in Hung Dao commune has long been prioritized for basic synchronous investment, 100% of village roads, alleys, and inter-village roads in the whole commune have been asphalted and concreted, ensuring convenient travel for people.

The power system, roads, schools, and stations are invested in and upgraded synchronously; cultural houses and hamlets are invested in building new and upgrading and expanding spaciously, the people's economic and spiritual life is increasingly improving; Social welfare, people's health and social security in the area are given attention.

Also in Dong Cup, in February 2024, the locality will inaugurate a community cultural house combined with a memorial shrine for Dong Cup hamlet. Attending this ceremony were former Politburo member and President Truong Tan Sang and leaders and local people.

The cultural house combined with the memorial altar of Dong Cup hamlet was built on an area of 4,300m2. The project includes the items of a cultural house combined with a memorial shrine built on 2 floors, with a total floor area of 670m2. The items of wells, ponds, flower gardens... are built synchronously and respect absolute status.

According to Mr. Nguyen The Hoan - Chairman of Cao Bang City People's Committee, the project was inaugurated and put into use, responding to the long-standing expectations of the government, people of Hung Dao commune and neighboring hamlets and communes. From now on, people have a space, a spacious cultural house to gather, organize cultural, artistic, sports events...

45 years ago, on March 9, 1979, on the way back, a group of enemy soldiers forced a group of workers working in the fields to the Vong Cup area and used bamboo stakes to kill 43 innocent people. Notably, among the unfortunate victims, mostly women and children, there were many victims who were pregnant before being murdered. For 44 years since 1979, the place where 43 people were murdered in the General Cup was covered with deserted grass, with only cold wells, old bamboo pine trees and a sign marking the painful event. At the end of 2023, Cao Bang City will rebuild this area into a community cultural space and a memorial area with a total capital of 13 billion VND, mobilized from socialization and contributions from the people.
