Hanoi is accelerating the progress of the Kim Nguu downstream route renovation project to improve drainage capacity for the southern area of Hanoi City before the 2026 rainy and storm season. The Hanoi Department of Construction requests contractors to focus manpower, equipment, and accelerate construction to complete the flood prevention project according to plan.
According to the Hanoi Department of Construction, the project to renovate the downstream Kim Nguu line connecting To Lich River with Yen So Pumping Station is being implemented under an emergency order, which is important in enhancing drainage capacity for the southern area of the city. Up to now, the progress of the entire project has reached about 60% of the contract volume.
Hanoi Department of Construction said that the unit regularly inspects the site and urges progress with the goal of completing the project before the peak rainy season. At a recent handover meeting and site inspection, Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Construction Dao Duy Phong requested the investor and contractors to mobilize maximum manpower and equipment, increase the number of construction teams to compensate for progress, and at the same time ensure absolute safety of the construction site and operation of the urban drainage system.
Currently, on the downstream Kim Nguu route, 10 units are simultaneously deploying SW600B prestressed pile driving with about 115 technical staff and workers and nearly 70 specialized equipment. The pile driving volume reaches more than 81%. Many other items such as the filter layer behind the piles, beams, and cement piles are also being accelerated.
Along with that, the box culvert connecting To Lich River with Linh Dam lake along Nguyen Phan Chanh street is entering the completion phase. According to construction units, the installation of box culverts has reached over 81%, Larsen sheet piles have reached over 86%; many sections have restored the roadbed and organized traffic to serve people again.
Notably, the collection and discharge gate area at Linh Dam Park and Bac Linh Dam bridge are basically completed according to the plan, creating conditions for synchronous connection with the drainage system of the entire project. Units set a goal to complete construction and restore the entire route before May 25, 2026.
However, the project implementation process is facing many difficulties when entering the rainy season. Some items have not reached the set progress; the organization of drainage and maintenance of drainage in conditions of both construction and operation of the existing system creates great pressure for contractors.
In particular, due to weak geological foundation, cracks and tilting of adjacent works have appeared in some areas. Faced with this reality, construction units have researched drilling and leading solutions before pressing piles to reduce vibration, and at the same time coordinated with insurance units to inspect and assess the level of impact to have remedial plans according to regulations.
In addition to the progress pressure, labor mobilization is also facing difficulties because many infrastructure projects in Hanoi are being implemented simultaneously at the same time, leading to competition for construction labor sources.
Faced with the above situation, the leaders of the Department of Construction requested the Project Management Board to review the capacity of contractors, resolutely replace units that do not meet the progress requirements; and at the same time maintain at least 12 regular construction teams and study to increase to 14 teams at locations that meet the conditions.
In parallel with the requirement to accelerate progress, the Department of Construction also emphasized ensuring labor safety, traffic safety, environmental sanitation and restoring technical infrastructure after construction. Contractors are required to urgently fix subsidence and cracks, restore the original condition of the road surface and sidewalks to ensure urban aesthetics and safety for people.
The project is expected to contribute to improving drainage capacity for the To Lich - Kim Nguu river basin, reducing the risk of flooding for the southern Hanoi area in the near future.
