In mid-October 2024, present at the landslide area of Group 7, Yen The town, Lao Dong Newspaper reporters recorded thousands of cubic meters of rock and soil sliding down close to the houses of many households.
With the naked eye, it is easy to observe that on the top of the hill, behind the houses, there are many large cracks along the embankment with a length of about 40m. This not only poses a potential risk of landslides but can also threaten the lives and property of people below.
Standing in front of the house - the property accumulated over many years at risk of being buried by rocks and soil, Ms. Hoang Thi Tho (49 years old, group 7, Yen The town) worried: "This is the property associated with the difficult times of the couple, from the time when they had nothing in hand, saving up for a long time to be able to build a property like this".
The woman recalled the terrible stormy days in early September, during the heavy rain, the sound of falling rocks mixed with shouts.
"At its peak on the evening of September 9, the rain was pouring down, rocks and soil were at risk of landslides. My husband and I could only run for our lives, leaving all our belongings behind," said Ms. Tho.
Pointing to the landslide that had just occurred after the rain, revealing a stretch of land tens of meters high, Mrs. Tho shared: "My husband and I live together, and our children work far away. At night, my husband and I do not dare to sleep but have to take turns keeping watch."
According to Ms. Tho, after the rocks and soil behind the hill collapsed, the local government sent machinery to level the ground, however, the construction unit was very cautious.
"The machinery was delivered on September 16. As of September 30, the soil and rocks were still scattered. In addition, the heavy rain on October 3 caused the house to go from a low landslide to a high landslide risk," Ms. Tho added.
The landslide not only affected Mrs. Tho's family but also threatened three other households in Group 7. Mr. Hoang Hieu, Mrs. Tho's neighbor, is also worried that his house could be buried by rocks and soil.
"After more than 20 days of staying away from the storm, my family started to return. We thought we could clean up the house and stabilize our lives, but now we have to live in fear. Currently, rocks and soil have buried the family's outbuildings. Just one more rain and the whole house will collapse at any time. I hope the construction unit will soon complete the leveling work to ensure the lives of the people," Mr. Hieu confided.
Speaking with Lao Dong, Chairman of Yen The Town People's Committee Tang Ket Du said that immediately after the landslide occurred, local authorities and functional forces directly went down to record and grasp the situation.
"Currently, the town has 4 landslides where people live. The authorities as well as construction units are making efforts to ensure the leveling and safety of people and property," informed the Chairman of the People's Committee of Yen The town.
