The transport infrastructure system plays an important role in the socio-economic development of Can Tho city. However, many national highways, provincial roads... in Can Tho City are currently facing rapid degradation.
Most of the road surface is constructed with plastic sheets, which have been in operation for many years in the context of increasingly extreme weather. This makes the road surface susceptible to damage and peeling, forcing continuous repair, significantly affecting traffic safety, transportation activities and people's lives.

According to the Department of Construction, the preliminary calculation shows that the funding needed for maintaining and repairing the city's national highway, provincial road and inland waterway system in 2026 is estimated at about 700 billion VND. Of which, the cost for maintaining national highways is about 320 billion VND, while provincial and waterway roads need about 380 billion VND.
To solve the problem of road surface degradation, the Department of Construction recommends that the People's Committee of Can Tho City consider allocating enough capital for maintenance in 2026, in order to promptly handle damaged areas and improve the quality of the road surface.
In the long term, the Department of Construction proposes to implement a project to renovate the entire road surface of the provincial road system, or develop a 5-year plan to gradually complete the comprehensive upgrade, in accordance with the budget balance capability.

In parallel with regular maintenance work, the city is prioritizing speeding up the progress of a number of key transport projects. In particular, the Western Ring Road Project (from National Highway 91 to National Highway 61C) and the Provincial Road 923 Construction and Upgrade and Expansion Project are expected to contribute to strengthening inter-regional connectivity, reducing the load on existing routes and promoting urban development when completed.
However, the progress of these two projects is still delayed due to problems related to compensation and site clearance. Therefore, the Department of Construction recommends that the City People's Committee direct the City Land Fund Development Center, Phong Dien Commune People's Committee and Phuoc Thoi Ward People's Committee to urgently coordinate to resolve the remaining procedures, in order to ensure clean land for handover to contractors on schedule, while contributing to promoting the disbursement of public investment capital during the year.
On Provincial Road 932, observations show that during rush hour, many students and cyclists and motorbikes have to struggle to cross muddy, rough roads. Cars, especially agricultural trucks, also move slowly and are stunted, causing fuel consumption, easily damaging vehicles and slowing down transportation progress.
Currently, the Department of Construction is assigned to manage 7 national highways with a total length of 277 km; 40 provincial routes with a length of 817 km; 31 inland waterways with a length of about 595 km, along with 3 large bridges in the city including: Quang Trung Bridge, Cai Rang Bridge and Tran Hoang Na Bridge.
By recommending adequate capital allocation and at the same time drastically promoting the progress of key projects, Can Tho hopes to strongly improve the quality of transport infrastructure in the coming years, creating a solid foundation for socio-economic development and improving people's lives.
