The floodwaters came quickly - unable to react
On July 23, a day after storm No. 3, Lao Dong Newspaper reporters returned to Kien Long village, Van Loc commune, Thanh Hoa province, where heavy damage caused by storms and floods occurred. Here, many village roads and paths leading to households are still flooded, many people and chicken farm owners are waiting, digging in the floodwaters to collect a large number of dead chickens and ducks after floods.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thang (owner of Kien Long chicken farm) said that during the 2 days (21 and 22.7), there was very heavy and prolonged rain in the area. At around noon on July 22, the floodwaters began to rise very quickly, flowing into the houses and the farm, causing severe flooding.
"At first, the water came, the family tried to control the embankment to prevent water from rushing into the farm, but the water rose at each time, threatening the chicken farm. In that situation, the family decided to call on relatives, neighbors and local authorities to rescue and move the flock of more than 12,000 chickens" - Mr. Thang said.
According to Mr. Thang, although he quickly called for help and moved the chickens, the floodwaters hit in too quickly, causing about 2,500 chickens in the farm to sink, causing an estimated loss of more than 100 million VND. "I have been raising chickens on a farm and raising them for nearly 2 decades, but my family has never suffered such damage from floods, I can't help but feel sad" - Mr. Thang said
Unlucky like Mr. Thang's family, Ms. Vu Thi Na's family (in Kien Long village) lost 5,000 chickens in the rice fields along the water, estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of VND. Remembering the scene of thousands of chickens submerged in floodwaters - Na burst into tears. "After borrowing from the bank, my brothers and family invested in building a chicken farm with an amount of more than 1 billion VND, and now we have only raised a second generation and lost everything. Now I don't know where to get the money to pay off the debt" - Ms. Na exclaimed.
According to Ms. Na, at around 2:00 p.m. on July 22, floodwaters came, and some other farms in the locality still had locations to rescue and move the chickens, while her family had no place to bring the chickens to safety. "In just a few minutes, the floodwaters came, the whole family, despite the screams and efforts, had to cry helplessly, standing watching thousands of chickens submerged in water" - Ms. Na exclaimed.
Urgently destroy and clean up the environment
According to records, in Kien Long village, there are dozens of chicken farms such as Mr. Thang and Ms. Na's family. After the storm, few houses had a few hundred pigs, many houses had thousands of poultry dying.
Currently, with the help of local authorities, families are urgently clearing and gathering dead chickens to destroy, bury and clean up the flooded barn.
Speaking with Lao Dong, a representative of the leader of Van Loc commune, Thanh Hoa province said that at noon yesterday (July 22), when there was a heavy storm and flooded many farms, the local government mobilized maximum forces and means to rescue and support farm owners to rescue and move livestock. However, the floodwaters were so fast that rescue efforts were difficult.
The commune has a total of about 170,000 poultry in the commune. The storm No. 3 caused damage to more than 10 farms, with the estimated number of poultry killed by flooding being tens of thousands. The locality is continuing to coordinate and support people in handling the number of dead chickens to ensure environmental hygiene.
