The Saigon River route is included in the Ho Chi Minh City Planning for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, which has just been approved by the Prime Minister.
According to the plan, the Saigon River route is 78.2km long, from the border of Tay Ninh province to the intersection of Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway with Rung Sac road (Can Gio district).
The minimum route scale is 4 - 8 lanes for motor vehicles combined with separate lanes for bicycles and light urban railway (section from city center to Cu Chi).
Ho Chi Minh City hopes that the Saigon River road will open up a new direction for urban, commercial and service development, creating a highlight for the river landscape, attracting domestic and foreign tourists.
The route will create a new traffic axis along the North-South corridor, connecting traffic in District 12, Hoc Mon, Cu Chi to the city center with Can Gio, Nha Be and District 7 districts.
The route also connects with Ring Road 2, Ring Road 3, Ring Road 4, Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway, creating a radial axis, along with National Highways 13, 22, Ho Chi Minh City - Moc Bai Expressway, Ho Chi Minh City - Chon Thanh, improving exploitation and investment efficiency, contributing to the completion of the transportation system in the area.
At the same time, the Saigon River road will help strengthen regional connectivity of routes passing through such as Binh Duong and Tay Ninh, reduce the load on existing national highways and enhance connectivity between economic development areas.
Previously, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport proposed prioritizing investment in the Saigon River road section through the city center from now until 2030.
The riverside route from Ba Son Bridge (District 1) to Tan Cang boundary (Binh Thanh District) is nearly 2km long and will be invested in construction with a cross-section width of 31 - 33m.
When completed, this route will connect Ton Duc Thang Street (District 1) to Tan Cang Area (Binh Thanh District), passing through high-end residential areas such as Saigon Pearl and Vinhomes. The total investment capital for this project is expected to be around VND1,800 billion.
Also according to the Ho Chi Minh City Planning for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, Ton Duc Thang Street along the Saigon River will be underground.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport has proposed building a nearly one-kilometer-long underpass under Ton Duc Thang Street from Ba Son Bridge to Khanh Hoi Bridge.
The project has a total estimated investment of about 2,100 billion VND, and is proposed to be implemented before 2030.
