High tide, Ca Mau strengthens response

NHẬT HỒ |

Ca Mau - Water levels on rivers and canals in the province continue to rise, with the highest tide peaks at measuring stations at level above alert level III.

According to the forecast of the Ca Mau Regional Hydrometeorological Station on November 20, in the coming days, the high tide will recede slowly but will remain high, with the risk of localized flooding in low-lying areas, overflowing embankments, causing damage to aquaculture, property and landslides along rivers and coasts. In addition, the northeast monsoon with medium to strong intensity will continue to strengthen further south.

To proactively deploy measures to respond to high tides combined with the northeast monsoon, the Chairman of the People's Committee of Ca Mau province requested the provincial departments, branches, sectors, unions and the People's Committees of districts and cities of Ca Mau, according to their assigned functions and tasks, to closely monitor forecasts and warnings about high tides, promptly notify people about the developments and level of impact of high tides, thereby proactively taking appropriate response measures; propagate, guide and recommend measures to prevent damage to documents and assets of agencies, units and people; mobilize people to actively clear sewers and ditches to drain water and clean the environment immediately after the high tide recedes, in order to prevent the outbreak of diseases.

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, serving as the standing agency for natural disaster prevention, control, and search and rescue, proactively updates information on high tides, potential damages, and their developments. It notifies relevant levels and sectors to guide the public on preventive and responsive measures. The department also directs affiliated units to collaborate with local authorities to operate the tidal sluice system effectively and reasonably, aiming to protect freshwater areas and mitigate the impact of high tides.

Additionally, it conducts regular inspections to promptly detect, address, and reinforce landslide-prone areas, low dike sections, and roads to minimize damage. The department strengthens guidance for residents on reinforcing embankments, preventing overflows, and safeguarding aquaculture, crops, and production activities. It promptly implements policies to support production recovery due to natural disasters, following prescribed procedures for eligible cases. Regular updates on implementation results are synthesized and reported to the Provincial People’s Committee.

The Department of Transport shall preside over and coordinate with relevant units and localities to proactively develop plans to ensure traffic safety in areas and routes that have not been upgraded and are still flooded during high tides; review damaged locations and road sections that are likely to be flooded, proactively develop preventive solutions, provide guidance and warnings to traffic participants to avoid accidents.

The People's Committees of districts and cities of Ca Mau direct functional units to focus on implementing flood response work. In case of damage caused by flood tides, proactively organize visits, encourage and mobilize forces to help people overcome the damage and effectively and promptly use resources to overcome the consequences of natural disasters according to regulations. At the same time, establish and store complete records and documents as a basis for reporting and proposing to competent authorities to consider and support damage recovery when conditions are met.
