Teacher shortage
According to the People's Committee of Lang Chanh district, in the 2024-2025 school year, the locality is short of 92 teachers compared to the number assigned by the province. In primary schools alone, there is a shortage of 38 teachers.
Typically, Yen Thang Primary School is short of 8 teachers; Giao Thien Primary School and Tri Nang Primary School are short of 6 teachers; Tan Phuc Primary School is short of 5 teachers.
In addition, in the local secondary school block, there is also a shortage of 22 teachers, mainly in subjects such as: English, Information Technology, Fine Arts, Chemistry and Geography.
“To overcome the shortage of teachers, the province assigned the district 58 targets for signing contracts according to Decree 111 of the Government. After that, the district organized recruitment, but only recruited 25 teachers. Therefore, by the end of September 2024, the district Department of Education and Training submitted a proposal to the district chairman for approval of the policy of contracting work for the remaining 92 teachers according to the payroll,” said Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Son - Head of the Department of Education and Training of Lang Chanh district.
Regarding the lack of teachers at the school, Mr. Nguyen Van Nhan - Principal of Yen Khuong Primary School, Lang Chanh District said that according to the quota, the school was assigned 34 positions, but until now there is still a shortage of teachers in the subjects of Information Technology and English.
“Like previous years, to solve the shortage of teachers in these subjects, the district has mobilized teachers from other schools to teach. However, this school year, the school still has no teachers to teach,” said the principal of Yen Khuong Primary School.
Sharing the same situation, Mr. Trinh Quoc Viet - Principal of Giao Thien Secondary School, Lang Chanh district said that in the 2024-2025 school year, the school had 2 teachers teaching Music and English transferred to other jobs, then there were no teachers to teach these 2 subjects so they had to temporarily stop.
According to research, the shortage of teachers is not only in Lang Chanh district but also in most mountainous districts of Thanh Hoa such as Ba Thuoc, Quan Hoa, Quan Son, Muong Lat..., causing some subjects to be temporarily suspended.
Difficulty in recruitment
According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Son - Head of the Department of Education and Training of Lang Chanh district, the shortage of teachers has been happening for many years. Therefore, to overcome this problem, right after Thanh Hoa province assigned the target of signing contracts according to Decree 111 of the Government, the district urgently announced widely on the mass media to recruit, however, the number of people coming to submit applications was very small.
"The reason may be that the benefits do not meet the needs of the recruits. In addition, new graduates from the lowlands do not want to go to the mountains to work because it is far from home and difficult," Mr. Son shared.
Mr. Tran Van Thuc - Director of Thanh Hoa Department of Education and Training - said that due to the shortage of teachers in recent years, in 2024, Thanh Hoa province was assigned by the Ministry of Home Affairs to supplement the number of teachers with 2,700 positions. In addition, the Provincial People's Council also allowed the recruitment of 3,800 contract teachers according to Decree 111 of the Government.
“As of August 2024, districts, towns and cities in the area have recruited nearly 4,000 teachers, the number of teachers still lacking is somewhat difficult to recruit, mainly in mountainous districts. In the immediate future, while not having time to recruit the remaining teachers, the Department has requested districts and education departments to continue implementing solutions such as: teachers teaching inter-school, inter-level teaching, and teaching extra periods to ensure teaching and learning according to the new program" - Mr. Thuc informed.
Also according to the representative of Thanh Hoa Department of Education and Training, to continue to solve the shortage of teachers in the area, the Department has ordered a number of universities to train teachers, thereby helping to increase the recruitment source and increase the number.
