According to Minister Nguyen Manh Hung, the four characteristics needed for leaders in the digital transformation era are: Modesty, learning; adaptability; vision and interaction.

In which, “humility to learn” comes from awareness. When everything changes rapidly, no one can know everything; knowing what you don’t know is as important as knowing what you do know; leaders must accept that others know more than they do; leaders must put aside their strong personalities to respect and listen to other ideas and opinions; leaders must be able to receive feedback; leaders turn from an expert to a supporter…

“Adaptability” is short-term focus. It is not the strongest or the most intelligent that survives, but the most adaptable; change is constant, so must perceptions; leaders must be adaptable to solving new, complex problems, and be willing to change perceptions; leaders must still plan, but must also be willing to re-evaluate their plans as new developments arise.

“Having a vision” is focusing on the long term. Although many things are unclear in the short term, leaders must still have a clear vision. The faster things change, the more disruptive new technologies and new models are, the more important it is to define a vision and stick to it. Define a vision and stick to it even if you don’t know how to achieve it. Adapt to short-term changes, but stick to the long-term vision. A clear vision is more important than a detailed plan. Because the detailed plan can change tomorrow.

“Interaction” is an emotional factor. A leader in a fast-changing environment must be a good listener and communicator; willing and ready to listen, interact and inform those involved. Always curious, interested and seeking new things; most of a leader’s time is spent interacting with the outside world, either in person or online; sharing information and knowledge with others…
