Established 169 more trade unions
By the end of 2024, the Da Nang City Labor Federation managed 1,696 grassroots unions with 132,784 union members/138,784 workers, including 1,155 non-state sector unions with 92,444 union members/101,349 workers.
Mr. Le Van Dai - Vice President of Da Nang City Labor Federation - said that in the work of establishing grassroots unions and developing union members, the city Labor Federation set a target of increasing 19,000 union members, contributing to achieving the term target of 53,000 union members.
With the motto: "Where there are workers, there is the Vietnam Trade Union", and the desire to help workers participate in the Vietnam Trade Union to take care of their material and spiritual lives, represent and protect their legitimate rights and interests, in 2024, Da Nang City's trade unions at all levels have focused resources and concretized many solutions to increase the attraction of workers to the Trade Union, expand the coverage of grassroots trade unions in non-state enterprises, creating a breakthrough in the work of developing union members and establishing grassroots trade unions.
Up to now, the Da Nang City Labor Confederation has established 169 grassroots unions, of which 48 grassroots unions were established in enterprises with 25 or more employees; established 3 informal sector unions with 1,685 union members; developed 20,437/19,000 new union members, reaching 108% of the assigned target. However, regarding the target of increasing actual union members (19,000 people) assigned by the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, Da Nang only achieved 86% because the number of union members decreased during the year by 4,167 people due to job loss, lack of jobs or business dissolution.
Bright spot of the informal sector
According to Mr. Le Van Dai, Da Nang City currently has more than 300,000 workers in the informal sector. This group of workers often has unstable jobs, low incomes, no labor contracts or no mandatory social insurance. This is the group that the Trade Union organization pays special attention to in order to gather, manage, support and protect their legal rights. "This group of workers is still disadvantaged compared to the provisions of the law, so the Trade Union organization needs to gather, manage, support, help, care for and represent them. Therefore, the City Labor Federation has soon paid special attention to workers in this area," said Mr. Dai.
Right from the beginning of the year, in addition to the programs and projects for general welfare for union members and workers in general, and the major plans to develop union members throughout the city, the Standing Committee of the Da Nang City Labor Federation also has a separate plan to select a pilot to organize a Union of independent preschool classes and a Union of Grab technology drivers. In particular, the pilot to establish a Union of independent preschool classes has been basically successful when it has been expanded to the remaining 6 districts. With the Technology Drivers Union - Grab, there are currently 184 workers who have applied to join and the number is continuing to increase.
In addition to the informal labor force, the Da Nang Labor Federation also takes advantage of two sources to develop union members: 1,277 enterprises with 10 or more employees with 39,000 employees who have not joined the Union organization and 1,065 grassroots unions that have not yet fully developed union members with 11,600 employees.
According to Mr. Le Van Dai, in order to achieve the results of developing union members and establishing grassroots unions as seen, in recent times, the Da Nang City Labor Federation has always focused on innovating the admission method associated with improving the quality of union members. In addition, the union has promptly implemented solutions to build a team of union officials, especially the chairmen of non-state enterprise grassroots unions, key officials, new officials, focusing on training on skills to develop union members, establish grassroots unions, dialogue and negotiation skills, etc.
