Far from home, take a construction site as a house
At the construction site of the Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway component 4 project through Soc Trang province, there are hundreds of engineers and workers working enthusiastically. What they have in common is that their children are far from home, taking advantage of the camp and construction to build houses, and considering the workers as relatives. Their only goal is to complete the work, making it easier for people to travel.
Mr. Dao Ba Nghi - one of the oldest workers at bridge No. 22 - has been involved in the construction profession for more than 30 years. Originally from Hai Duong, he was very used to being away from home during holidays and Tet.
"There are construction workers here and there, so when my wife gave birth to two children, I was not around. Most of everything at home and in taking care of the children is done by his wife. Far from home, not fulfilling my responsibilities as a husband and father, but for work, I advise myself to try to overcome it" - Mr. Nghi sadly said.
Mr. Nghi said that every year, his wife and children only counted on the fingers. On the occasion of April 30, although the company was rested, but because of the distant geographical distance and the work was in the sprint stage, he had to put aside the joy of reunion.
"Although we are not together, I call my family every day, considering it a joy and spiritual encouragement to be away from each other during holidays and Tet" - Mr. Nghi shared.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy - a worker working at bridge No. 22 is a special case. In Can Tho, without land and stable jobs, she and her son went to the dusty sun-y highway construction to make iron pillars and break lead for a living. On average, she and her children earn about 500,000 VND per day.
"This job is very hard, it is the peak of the dry season so the sun is strong. When I am too tired, I go into the bushes or the camp to rest, and when I am healthy, I go back to work. There are some workers who work as part-time workers. Since the large projects have been built in the West, our family has had more income, even though we have to be away from home, Ms. Thuy shared.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan - a worker constructing Dai Ngai 2 bridge connecting Cu Lao Dung district with the mainland of Soc Trang province - is in a similar situation. Originally from Thanh Hoa, she has been involved in the construction industry for decades. Knowing information about this project from her colleagues, she has been working there for more than a year.
"I came here alone, eating and resting on the construction site. When I arrived, I saved money to send back to my husband for treatment. The bridge is expected to be completed by the end of April, I will return to my hometown to visit my house and then go with another project" - Ms. Lan said.
Night at night at the construction site
At the Rach Mieu 2 bridge project, many workers are working hard to construct items to be ready for closure on April 30.
Mr. Dinh Hoang Nam - a construction engineer here - shared: "There are nights when we have to stay up all night to pour concrete, ensuring the quality of the project is not interrupted. Everyone is tired, but thinking about the joy of the people when the bridge is completed, we try our best.
Mr. Pham Anh Tuan - another construction worker - said: "There are days when we have to step into the strong water to check the bridge foundation or hang ourselves at an altitude of tens of meters to install girders and stretch cables. For us, each bridge is a spiritual child, a great pride.
According to Mr. Tuan, besides the team of engineers and workers also plays an indispensable role. From the welders, bored pile drillers, cranes drivers to drive piles ... all are important links in the rotation of the building. They work from dreamy to dark, despite the intense sunlight or the typical showers of the West, silently contributing to the strong changes of transport infrastructure here.
