Apple is said to be developing a series of ambitious iPhone features based on satellite technology, expanding the ability to use the device even in areas without mobile waves.
According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, the company is building a stronger foundation for a global connected ecosystem.
Currently, the iPhone has supported emergency messages and rescue contact via satellite, but Apple wants to go further.
Features being tested include a satellite API that allows developers to integrate this connection into their apps, a version of Apple Maps that works without the need for the Internet, and the ability to add images to satellite messages.
In particular, Apple is improving the ability to help devices automatically pick up satellite signals without requiring users to point their phones at the sky.
The source said that basic features will be provided free of charge, while extended services will be charged through network operators.
To realize this plan, Apple is collaborating with Globalstar, a key satellite partner, and providing financial support to upgrade the connection infrastructure.
Experts say that Apple may be laying the foundation for a new generation of iPhone, where the line between mobile networks and satellites is blurred, opening an era of unlimited connectivity for global users.
