What is male infertility?
According to research published in BMC Public Health, male infertility is a condition in which a man has a reduced ability to conceive with his female partner due to problems related to sperm production, with about 50% of couples worldwide suffering from infertility due to male factors.
What causes infertility in men?
Due to illness
Varicocele
Varicocele is a condition in which the veins of the testicles become abnormally enlarged. This condition may be related to testicular temperature regulation, leading to reduced sperm quality.
Due to infection
Infectious diseases including sexually transmitted diseases can interfere with sperm production, reduce sperm health or cause blockages in the vas deferens, which can hinder sperm movement.
Ejaculation problem
Retrograde ejaculation occurs when semen enters the bladder during orgasm instead of being released from the penis. This condition can be a complication of other local or systemic diseases such as spinal injuries, surgery on the bladder, prostate, urethra, diabetes, and medication.
Vas deferens obstruction
Blockages can occur anywhere in the testicles, epididymis, vas deferens, ejaculatory ducts, and urethra. Blockages in the vas deferens are one of the leading causes of male infertility.
Having problems with intercourse
This is a condition in which men have difficulty maintaining an erection during intercourse, premature ejaculation, pain during intercourse, anatomical abnormalities such as low urethral opening or psychological problems during intercourse.
Due to lifestyle
Some common habits that cause infertility in men include: Using drugs, drinking alcohol excessively, smoking, stress, weight, occupation, and diet can lead to infertility.
Genetic factors
Chromosomal abnormalities are one of the common causes of male infertility. During conception, mutations or chromosomal disorders can cause hormonal changes, causing infertility in men. The rate of genetic infertility in men is often higher than in women.
