NGUYỄN ĐĂNG |

According to statistics, Vietnam generates 72,341 tons of domestic solid waste every day, which poses a major requirement for collection, classification and treatment.

According to statistics in 2025, 72,341 tons of domestic solid waste are generated daily nationwide, of which 39,194 tons/day are in urban areas, accounting for 54.17%, and 33,147 tons/day in rural areas, accounting for 45.82%.

The encouraging point is that the collection rate of domestic solid waste has increased steadily year by year. The rate of domestic solid waste collected and treated in urban areas is on average about 97.59% (an increase of 0.33% compared to 2024), exceeding the target set by the National Assembly (95%).

Sharing at the Workshop "Waste sorting at source: Infrastructure synchronization - Effective implementation" held in Ho Chi Minh City on the afternoon of August 28, Mr. Do Tien Doan - Deputy Head of the Waste Management Department, Department of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment pointed out some shortcomings such as: waste sorting at households and individuals, still facing many difficulties and challenges due to the low awareness of a part of the population; many households have not formed the habit of sorting, have not implemented sorting in accordance with regulations; collection and transportation infrastructure does not meet requirements, the area is larger after the merger, but the technical infrastructure for collection, transportation, and treatment of domestic solid waste has not increased correspondingly...

In addition, treatment technology is still mainly based on landfill methods, in which many landfills are unsanitary. Modern technologies such as waste burning for electricity generation, biodegradation, and recycling have not been widely deployed due to large investment costs and limited management and operation capacity...

Meanwhile, the Vietnam Packaging Recycling Alliance (PRO Vietnam) emphasizes that waste sorting at source is a necessary condition to create a quality material flow, effectively connecting with the collection - recycling ecosystem and gradually realizing the circular economy; contributing to environmental protection and resource preservation.

To date, PRO Vietnam has collected and recycled nearly 180,000 tons of packaging of all kinds, and at the same time accompanied and supported private waste collection forces, gradually improving capacity and participating more effectively in the recycling ecosystem.

The workshop "Waste classification at source: Infrastructure synchronization - Effective implementation" within the framework of the Vietnam Green 2026 project, organized by Tuoi Tre Electronic Newspaper in coordination with the Vietnam Packaging Recycling Alliance, is an opportunity for management agencies, businesses, and collection - recycling units to share experiences, identify practical problems and propose feasible solutions.
