A diet rich in fast-food, supplements and ultra-processed foods is driving non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) globally, warns Dr. Kathleen Viveiros, a doctor at Harvard Health Publishing.
Fast and fried foods
It often contains a large amount of saturated fat, deep-fried oil and empty calories. According to experts, people with ≥ 20% calories from fast food have a significantly higher risk of liver fat accumulation.
Drinks with high sugar and fructose corn syrup
Dr. Kathleen Viveiros also pointed out: Sweet water and sugary drinks make the liver metabolize excess fructose, leading to fat accumulation and chronic hepatitis.
Red meat and processed meat
An analysis shows that eating a lot of red meat, sausages, salted pork with smoke is associated with a very high risk of fatty liver.
Refined starch, white bread, white rice, starch
Refined carbs cause blood sugar and insulin to rise rapidly, promoting fat storage in the liver. Dr. Kathleen Viveiros recommends: "Avoid refined carbs, switch to whole grains to reduce the burden on the liver".
Foods high in salt and trans fats High in salt and trans fats also increase inflammation, fluid retention and pressure on the liver, causing liver dysfunction.
Dr. Kathleen Viveiros recommends that to protect the liver, limit the above food groups and prioritize a diet rich in vegetables, whole grains, fish, olive oil, this method is said to help prevent and reverse liver fat.
