Silicone is a common ingredient in many skin care products, so is silicone safe for health?

What is silicone?

Silicone is a synthetic polymer, whose name is shortened from “silicoketone”. Silicone consists of a silicon-oxygen backbone and other elements including hydrogen or hydrocarbon groups attached to silicon atoms. Because of its high durability, stability and ease of production, silicone is widely used and found in many everyday items, especially in medicine, the preparation of sealants, adhesives, cooking utensils, used in insulation and electrical insulation...

In the beauty industry, silicone is an ingredient that is present in almost all types of skin care products. Thanks to its sensory properties and its ability to soften much more than conventional cosmetic ingredients, silicone is quite popular.

Silicone ingredients found in skin care cosmetics, foundations, and sunscreens such as dimethicone, cyclomethicone, and dimethiconol create a smooth, supple skin without causing the skin to secrete oil and grease, and at the same time, improve the feeling of discomfort caused by other ingredients. Dimethicone, cyclomethicone, and dimethiconol with large molecular weights will form a waterproof film on the skin, which can help prolong the effect of skin care or sunscreen.

Is silicone good for skin?

Improves Skin Elasticity: One of the top reasons silicone is used in skin care is its ability to improve elasticity. As we age, our skin loses its natural firmness and suppleness, silicone forms a breathable barrier on the skin, locking in moisture to help maintain natural elasticity.

Scar reduction: A study published in the Journal of Clinical and Cosmetic Dermatology found that using silicone helped heal skin wounds, reduce scarring, and fade the appearance of scars over time.

Keeps skin hydrated: Silicones form a barrier that prevents water loss from the skin. Silicone-based products are especially good for people with dry or sensitive skin.

Softens the skin: When using silicone-based products, the skin will feel smooth immediately because this ingredient has a smooth texture. This is also the reason why silicone is commonly used in primers and moisturizers.

Improves skin texture: Silicone acts as a temporary filler, making the skin appear smoother and more even-toned. Silicone molecules fill in the spaces between cells, giving the skin a flawless appearance.
