The floods were widespread in the Central and Central Highlands, bringing great loss and pain. The story of not being able to save people in the flood by journalist Phan Thanh Ha - Deputy Director of the Central Residence Agency - Voice of Vietnam shows the fierceness of natural disasters and the suffering of the whole community, which is towards the people of the Central region who are struggling with floods.
I could not help save my friends parents from the flood - that is what journalist Thanh Ha shared on Facebook. Previously, on the evening of November 19, he called to ask about the family of teacher Tran Thu Van, from Tuy An, Phu Yen province (old) now Dak Lak - an area heavily affected by floods. Ms. Van's father is 85 years old, seriously ill, but stays at home alone with the maid. Ms. Van's mother is also being treated at Tuy Hoa Hospital. When the flood came and the water rose fiercely, teacher Van tried to pray for help everywhere.
Knowing this, Mr. Thanh Ha texted and called, asking for support from the rescue force under Military Region 5. Information for rescue is being forwarded to the soldiers on duty. But the water was flowing rapidly, people were calling for help everywhere, making it impossible for authorities to reach them in time. By evening, the bad news came, Ms. Van's father had passed away. Not long after, her mother also breathed her last.
Ms. Van followed her husband to Da Nang, teaching at Sao Nam Boarding School (old Duy Xuyen, Quang Nam), Mr. Ngoc is the Principal of Nguyen Hien School, also in Duy Xuyen. November 20th Teachers' Charter Day became a sad day for teachers' families.
Their story is just one of countless tragedies that people in the Central provinces are suffering today. Prolonged heavy rain caused the river and stream system to overflow and wrap up floods. Many hydroelectric reservoirs are beyond capacity and release floodwaters at the interms. All over the landslide, traffic routes were cut off and isolated. The armed forces, border guards, police and rescue forces urgently deployed evacuation and supply, but many families were still stranded or isolated.
On the afternoon of November 20, the rain gradually stopped, floods on the river gradually decreased, but floods still surrounded many urban areas such as Quy Nhon, Tuy Hoa, Nha Trang. Many coastal areas of the Central region are still submerged in silver water. Teachers and students in the flooded areas of the Central region have almost put all activities to celebrate Teachers' Day on hold.
