The latest forecast shows that the low pressure area off Luzon is still likely to strengthen into a tropical depression in the next 24 hours.

According to storm news, the latest low pressure from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), there is currently a low pressure area located in the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

The low pressure area identified by PAGASA is LPA 08i, located about 865km east of the northernmost point of Luzon Island. This agency assesses that the low pressure area is likely to strengthen into a tropical depression in the next 24 hours.

If developed into a tropical cyclone, this system will be locally named Pilandok by PAGASA. This is the next name in the Philippine storm name list.

PAGASA weather experts said that the low pressure area may strengthen the southwest monsoon (Habagat). This monsoon is forecast to continue to affect Luzon and the Western Visayas in the next 4-5 days.

The developments of LPA 08i are being monitored in the context that PAGASA also warns of the risk of more tropical cyclones appearing in the region. In the forecast of potential threats from tropical cyclones published on August 27, PAGASA assessed the possibility of the appearance of threats from tropical cyclones at a high level in the first week, from August 27 to September 2.

According to PAGASA's weather forecast on the morning of August 28, LPA 08i continues to be identified in eastern Itbayat, Batanes province, about 720km away. The agency said the southwest monsoon is affecting Luzon and Visayas.

Updated information later showed that PAGASA assessed that the low pressure area could develop into a tropical cyclone by the end of the week, but did not forecast that this system would make landfall directly in the Philippines. If it strengthens into a storm, the expected direction of movement is towards the Taiwan (China) area.

PAGASA recommends that people continue to follow updates as the low pressure area is likely to change in intensity and direction of movement.
