Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra, 39 years old, resigned as leader of the Pheu Thai Party last week. The move comes after the court removed Paetongtarn Shinawatra from the position of prime minister in August for ethical violations related to the Thailand-Cambodia border war.
Analysts say her departure is a strategic move to protect Pheu Thai from potential legal challenges and could have a decades-long impact on the Shinawatra family's political landscape in Thailand.
Pheu Thai members have elected Julapun Amornvivat - former Deputy Minister of Finance - as the new leader. Mr. Julapun Amornvivat is a lawmaker from Chiang Mai province, where the Pheu Thai party has a strong influence.
Mr. Julapun Amornvivat, 50 years old, is the son of veteran politician Sompong Amornvivat, who served as Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the Pheu Thai Party in 2019.
New leader Pheu Thai is also one of the campaigners for the party's key campaign policies ahead of the 2023 election, including a proposed economic stimulus package worth 10,000 baht ($300) and a legalization of the casino.
