Izvestia reported that on May 23, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban accused Ukraine of conducting spiel activities in Hungarian territory, including intelligence operations.
Mr. Orban said that Ukrainian agents are trying to influence Hungarian public opinion to promote favorable results for Kiev in the population vote on joining the European Union (EU).
According to Mr. Orban, they also established contacts with opposition parties and carried out "calum cases" to undermine people's trust.
Previously, on May 20, Hungarian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs in charge of Public Relations and Public Relations, Mr. Zoltan Kovacs, said that the country's intelligence agency had discovered two Ukrainian spies operating and collecting information in Hungary.
According to Mr. Kovacs, the goal of the Kiev spies is to change public opinion in the direction that is beneficial to Ukraine.
This statement was made in the context of Prime Minister Orban repeatedly warning about serious consequences if Ukraine joins the EU, including the risk of "crichoplasting" the Hungarian economy and negative impacts on the entire bloc.
At the time, Mr. Orban affirmed that the Hungarian people would not accept the decision of leaders in Kiev or Brussels to replace them in the future of the country, and said that they would use their right of refusal to prevent the process of admitting Ukraine.
Meanwhile, in early May, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced that it had dismantled a suspected Hungarian-backed intelligence network to gather information about Kiev's defense system.
According to SBU, the two suspects, former Ukrainian soldiers, were arrested on charges of treason. They were said to have received cash and secret communication equipment from a Hungarian intelligence officer.
