The latest enhanced cold air bulletin from the National Meteorological Center (NMC) said that this cold air mass will continue to move east and south until December 4.
The head of the weather forecast team of the National Meteorological Center of China, Yang Shunan, said that this cold front has covered the entire northern part of China and will continue to flow south.
Temperature in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, northeastern China and northern China has dropped by 6-10 degrees Celsius, with some places dropping 12-14 degrees Celsius. These areas, along with the Shandong and Liuzong peninslands, also recorded strong winds of up to 39 km/h.
On the morning of December 3, Beijing and Tianjin recorded the coldest morning of the second half of the year, around minus 5 degrees Celsius. The cities of Truong Xuan (Cat Lam), Tham Duong (Lieu Ninh) and Thach Gia Trang (Ha Bac) also recorded temperatures dropping to their lowest level since the beginning of the season.
In the next 2 days, cold air will continue to move south, leading to the heaviest cold spell since the beginning of the season for many areas of central and eastern China. In some provinces such as Jiangsu, Anhui and Zhejiang, the temperature may drop by more than 10 degrees Celsius, with a feeling of severe cold due to the wind.
"The most prominent features of this cold spell are the complex weather impact and deep cooling," said Yang Shunan.
Along with strong winds and a sharp drop in temperatures, some places in Inner Mongolia and northern China also recorded sandstorms and dust storms in the early stages of the cold front.
Unlike the cold air mass in mid-November, which shifted westward and caused a stronger temperature drop in the southern and western regions, this cold air mass will move slightly northward, causing the area with the strongest temperature drop to be concentrated mainly in the northern part of the Yangtze River.
The National Meteorological Center said that on the morning of December 4, the coldest areas in China were in northeastern, northwestern and northern China. The lowest temperature below minus 10 degrees Celsius is forecast to appear in more than 10 provinces, including Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu and Hebei. Many major cities in northeastern China, such as Harbin or Zhuang, may record temperatures below minus 20 degrees Celsius for the first time this winter.
Forecasters in China said that by December 5, the temperature range below freezing will move to the farthest point in this intensified cold front, bringing severe cold to some areas of Zhejiang, Anhui and Hubei.
The cold air in China is forecast to weaken and end from the evening of December 4 to the night of December 5.
Meanwhile, according to the Vietnam National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, on December 3, cold air affected the northeastern region of the North, causing rain and showers; the temperature dropped to about 3-6 degrees Celsius; at Bach Long Vi station, there were strong northeast winds of level 6.
It is forecasted that on the night of December 3 and December 4, in the North and North Central regions, the lowest temperature will be 15-18 degrees Celsius, in mountainous areas 13-15 degrees Celsius, in some places below 12 degrees Celsius; the average temperature will be 18-20 degrees Celsius, in the mountainous areas of the North 16-18 degrees Celsius, in high mountainous areas below 15 degrees Celsius.
