A meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky could only be held to officialize agreements that are not "simple deals", Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said.
There have been calls to hold a summit between Mr. Putin - Mr. Trump - Mr. Zelensky for quite a long time, and you all know the position of our head of state: such a meeting is only feasible for the purpose of officializing the agreements. And those agreements are not at all a simple deal, they represent a very complex peace-building process with countless details," Peskov told reporters.
The Kremlin spokesman emphasized that it would be meaningless for presidents to meet just to discuss those details. "They can only meet to finalize the agreements," he said, while saying that the Ukrainian side lacks goodwill to participate in resolving the conflict.
Earlier, media reported that during a visit to Moscow this week, US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director John Ratcliffe proposed holding a trilateral meeting between the leaders of Russia, the US and Ukraine.
CIA Director arrives in Moscow on August 25. Mr. Peskov noted that Mr. Ratcliffe's trip is related to contacts between intelligence agencies of the two countries. Director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) Sergey Naryshkin confirmed that he met with the head of the CIA during his time in Moscow.
