The Standing Committee of Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee has just decided to set up a Steering Committee to arrange and reorganize administrative units at all levels and build a model of organization of local government 2 levels (referred to as the Steering Committee).

Member of the Politburo, Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Van should be the Head of the Steering Committee.

According to the decision, the members of the Steering Committee work according to the part -time regime, performing the tasks according to the assignment of the Head of the Steering Committee. At the same time, the members are allowed to use the contingent of officials and public servants of their agencies and units to advise and support the process of performing tasks.

Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Organizing Committee and Ho Chi Minh City Department of Home Affairs are assigned to be the standing agency of the Steering Committee, playing the role of General Unit and advising to implement specific tasks.

Earlier, on April 15, at the 39th Conference, the Executive Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, the delegates approved the draft plan to organize and reorganize administrative units at all levels and build a model of two -level local government organizations.

Currently, Ho Chi Minh City has 22 district administrative units (including 16 districts, 1 city and 5 districts) and 273 communal administrative units (including 210 wards, 5 towns and 58 communes).

According to the new plan, Ho Chi Minh City will leave the district level and proceed to arrange and reduce the number of administrative units at the commune level to 102 wards and communes.

Along with that, Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee has also approved the draft project to merge the provincial administrative unit. The project proposes to consolidate the three localities including Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau, in order to maximize the potential, regional links and socio -economic development.

After the merger, Ho Chi Minh City will have an area of ​​about 6,772 km², a population of more than 13.7 million people and including 168 administrative units at commune level (ward, commune, special zone).

Previously, Binh Duong province has built a plan of 91 units to 36; And Ba Ria - Vung Tau province decreased from 77 to 29 wards, communes and 1 special zone.
