The project to reorganize commune-level administrative units (ADUs) of Kien Giang province states that Tho Chau special zone will be established on the basis of the entire natural area of 13.98 km2 and the population of 1,896 people of Tho Chau island commune in Phu Quoc city. The working headquarters will be at the existing headquarters of the People's Committee of Tho Chau commune.
Tho Chau island commune is an archipelago (Tho Chu archipelago) very far away from the mainland and is a commune -level DVHC under Phu Quoc City. The Delta is located in the spending position in the southwestern waters of the country, where the A1 basis according to the Government's sovereignty statement on the baseline is used to calculate the width of territorial waters in Vietnam. Adjacent to international maritime roads about 12 nautical miles, with historical waters adjacent to the Kingdom of Cambodia located in the Gulf of Thailand, 101 km from the center of Phu Quoc City, 220 km from Rach Gia City.
Recently, Kien Giang Provincial Party Secretary Nguyen Tien Hai and the working delegation had a working session in Tho Chau island commune. The delegation conducted a field survey at the A1 facility on Hon Nhan and some key areas of national defense, security, economy - society in Tho Chau commune; grasped the development situation and listened to recommendations and proposals from the facility.
Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee Nguyen Tien Hai praised the spirit of solidarity and efforts to overcome difficulties of officials, soldiers and people of the island commune in recent years. Delta is a commune with a large area, the population is not crowded. Since the Government issued a decree to establish the commune so far, despite many difficulties, the authorities, troops and people here have always united and supported each other, and well performed the task of firmly protecting the sea and sacred islands of the country. The armed forces not only do well the defense tasks but also support people to live, from the initial households up to now, hundreds of households settle down and have gradually developed stable.
Tho Chau commune's economy has grown quite well in recent years, reaching 11-12%/year. Cultural and spiritual life has been improved, and my children are educated in good conditions. The team of doctors and nurses is always dedicated, loves their profession, and helps to take care of people's health. The policy for poor, near-poor households and meritorious people has been seriously implemented by the locality.
However, the Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee also pointed out the living and working conditions of the armed forces, officials and people on the island commune still have many difficulties and limited transportation. On average, there is an average of 5 days from Phu Quoc to the island, when the sea is moving or storms, the train cannot operate. The island road system is still small, the average income per capita is still low, clean water and electricity have not met the needs of the people.
Although the ADUs have a small area and population, they have a particularly important position in terms of national defense and security. The Provincial Party Secretary said that when orienting the planning of Tho Chau's socio-economic development, it is necessary to focus on exploiting the potential of high-quality tourism. It is necessary to plan aquaculture and seafood in a sustainable, safe, environmentally friendly manner, combined with island tourism. Manage and protect forest areas well, preserve the ecological environment, and call for investment from large enterprises.
There needs to be close coordination between Party committees, authorities, armed forces and people to ensure national defense, security, mutual support in life and sustainable socio-economic development in the future.
