Ethnic minority people escape poverty from rubber trees

In recent years, rubber trees have helped thousands of ethnic minority families in Dien Bien have stable income and brought sustainable livelihoods to unskilled workers.

Over 14.6 billion VND to distribute products to people

In accordance with the commitment to the people and Dien Bien province, from August 12 to August 22, Dien Bien Rubber Joint Stock Company has completed the payment of more than 14.6 billion VND in dividing rubber latex products exploited in 2024 to 4,091 households and individuals who have contributed land for rubber cultivation in 10 communes and wards in the area.

Talking to Lao Dong, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Cam - General Director of Dien Bien Rubber Joint Stock Company - said: "This is the 8th consecutive year the company has paid benefits to the people. Based on the total area of 3,558 hectares eligible for exploitation, we divide 10% of the product value after deducting expenses according to regulations. On average, each hectare of land contributes more than 4 million VND to the people".

According to Mr. Cam, to ensure convenience and transparency, the payment of land contributions to people is made in two forms, including: Payment through bank accounts (for individuals who already have an account card) and cash payment at the headquarters of the commune or ward where the people have land contributions.

Not only receiving annual land contributions, thousands of poor, unliterate people have also become workers of the company, having stable jobs and income. The changes in the lives of workers' families in recent years thanks to rubber trees are very significant.

Previously, many households, especially ethnic minorities, were extremely disadvantaged and only relied on unstable fields. Many people are not even literate, and there are almost no opportunities to find a job. However, since the rubber growing project was launched, thousands of people have had jobs and stable income.

Talking to reporters after receiving money from land contributions, Mr. Tong Van Uon - Ban Co Chuc 1, Muong Pon commune - said: "In addition to the amount of more than 4 million VND received once a year from land contributions, I also have the main income from workers' salaries. I earn more than 5 million VND per month. Life is much more stable than before".

Thousands of households have stable income

Having been with Dien Bien Rubber Joint Stock Company for 16 years, Mr. Le Van Quy, Captain of the Muong Pon 2 Rubber Team (Muong Pon Commune) is the one who witnessed this change most clearly.

Mr. Quy said: "My team has 43 workers, since entering the exploitation, the lives of the brothers have improved significantly, everyone is very excited. A stable source of income not only helps workers cover their living expenses but also takes care of their children's education and housework.

According to General Director of Dien Bien Rubber Joint Stock Company Nguyen Ngoc Cam, in addition to benefiting from land contributions, thousands of households with land contributions are also given priority support by the company to create jobs, with an average income of 5 million VND/person/month.

"Every year, the Company organizes visits, encourages and supports families of workers and households to actively work under contracts and protect their gardens" - Mr. Cam informed.

Currently, Dien Bien Rubber Joint Stock Company is coordinating with a number of commercial banks in the province to create personal accounts for people to contribute land, and then pay through bank accounts to the people.

Growing rubber in the disadvantaged area of Dien Bien is not only an economic project, but has become an effective and sustainable social security model for workers who have never been to school, contributing to hunger eradication and poverty reduction.
