In 4 inner-city districts - Ba Dinh, Hoan Kiem, Hai Ba Trung and Dong Da - Hanoi Urban Environment Company Limited (URENCO) has been implementing a completely new garbage collection model. Shifting from manual to mechanical, from daytime garbage collection to night, from open carts to composite closed bins - all are gradually realizing the goal of "for a bright - green - clean - beautiful Hanoi".
The pilot model in Quan Thanh and Dien Bien wards (Ba Dinh district) has brought encouraging results. During the day, small trucks coordinate with workers to maintain hygiene and pick up scrap along the streets, while at night, household waste is collected from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., according to a closed process. There is no longer a phenomenon of garbage stagnating and smelling in residential groups.
Notably, the entire process of washing sidewalks and roads was also transferred to specialized equipment. From 11:30 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., washing trucks, vacuum cleaners, high-pressure hoses... simultaneously took action, cleaning from underground cars to every sidewalk - something rarely seen before.
After 4 months, URENCO has deployed this model in 51/63 wards in 4 inner-city districts, drastically reducing the amount of garbage collected during the day from 252 tons to only 67 tons per day; cutting the number of garbage cranes from 139 to 8 points. At the same time, 1,500 closed trash bins have replaced 80% of open-air collection vehicles - which are considered a obsession with hygiene and aesthetics. In April 2025, 500 more boxes will be put into use to replace all remaining open-top vehicles.
However, to expand the model to all 16/30 districts under the management of URENCO, the cooperation of local authorities and people is needed. Propaganda work is being promoted on all channels - from loudspeakers, newspapers to Zalo, TikTok, fanpages... to raise people's awareness, encourage garbage disposal at the right time and place.
Many places have applied strong measures. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, inner-city districts have fined hundreds of millions of VND for illegal littering: Hoan Kiem nearly 314 million VND, Ba Dinh 195 million VND, Dong Da 115 million VND...
A representative of URENCO Hanoi said that the new model not only aims to improve environmental sanitation but is also in line with the Law on Environmental Protection 2020.
We will continue to improve, evaluate and propose a process that is more suitable to reality, with the motto Promoting all resources - Flexible adaptation - For clean Hanoi - UBENCO representative emphasized.
Every early morning, when Hanoi streets are cleaner, the sidewalks are no longer muddy, people are no longer clogged their noses passing through the garbage collection point, that is when the effectiveness of innovation begins to "absorb" - from awareness, to each urban lifestyle.
