HUE - Hue City authorities have built a soft embankment system to prevent landslides that sau into Thuan An coast.

Real estate, landslides sau into the mainland

After storm No. 10, the coastal area of Thuan An ward (Hue city) became devastated. One after another, large waves hit the shore, causing the walking path along the beach to be more severely damaged than last year. Recorded at the scene, the damaged road stretched nearly 1km, eroding 50 - 70m inland.

The broken concrete pieces, lamp posts, stone benches, and trees were swept away, creating a messy scene. Local people said that this area was damaged by the storm in 2024, but was then covered with sand and covered with broken patches, so the appearance is still stable. However, after the recent storm, the sand layer was completely washed away, revealing traces of old landslides and new cracks, making the situation more serious.

According to initial statistics, the landslide is at risk of affecting about 500 households, while threatening the coastal infrastructure system, tourism services and essential works.

In response to that development, the People's Committee of Hue City has directed the People's Committee of Thuan An Ward to compile statistics and report damage to regulate funds for recovery, and at the same time declare a state of emergency for this landslide area.

In the context of increasingly complex climate change, coastal erosion not only causes property damage but also directly affects the livelihoods of local people. A series of restaurants, eateries, parking lots and coastal resorts are at risk of being wiped out if the waves continue to encroach.

This beach was previously hundreds of meters away from the houses, now the waves are approaching the football field. Every time it rains heavily, the wind continues to eat deeper," said Mr. Phan Hoang Anh, a resident of Thuan An ward.

Establishing a soft, temporary but urgent embankment

Faced with serious landslides, the Hue City government has urgently deployed the construction of a temporary soft embankment to respond in the short term, protect residential areas and essential infrastructure works.

In recent days, in the coastal area of Thuan An, the construction atmosphere has been urgent, although the weather is still rainy and with big waves. The workers and engineers of the construction unit work continuously, pumping sand from the sea into the huge technical and geological pipe system, each pipe has a diameter of 5.3m, 50m long to reinforce the soft embankment.

Two sand dredgers and two excavators are operating at full capacity, racing against time to complete the project within 10 days. The 450m long soft embankment line extends from the area bordering the embankment of Phu Thuan commune (now in Thuan An ward) to the center of Thuan An beach.

Mr. Le Huu Duy - Construction Commander, Thua Thien Hue Irrigation Construction Joint Stock Company said that the implementation must take advantage of short favorable weather periods amid heavy rains. "We are mobilizing maximum human resources and equipment to complete the project on schedule, ensuring safety before the storm season," said Mr. Duy.

This is a temporary but necessary solution, helping to limit the risk of widespread landslides, protect residential areas and coastal traffic routes. After completion, the soft embankment will significantly reduce the impact of waves and stabilize the shore leg during this year's storm season.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tin - Owner of Thuan An Coastal Seafood Restaurant, expressed his joy at seeing the soft embankment project implemented in time. However, in the long term, he hopes that local authorities will soon build a solid, sturdy embankment so that people can live and do business with peace of mind along the coast, because this landslide situation has occurred frequently and is increasingly complicated.

Regarding the above issue, Mr. Nguyen Van Thuan - Vice Chairman of Thuan An Ward People's Committee said that landslides and erosion in the area are quite serious because of their location near Tam Giang. After storm No. 10, the ward issued a document requesting the city to take remedial measures. Currently, there is a policy to invest in the sea dike project in the area with a total investment of 250 billion VND and is expected to be implemented in 2026, the government and people of Thuan An hope that the project will help stabilize the coastal erosion.
