Landslides cause heavy damage in Ha Giang

Prolonged heavy rains have caused landslides and flash floods in some areas of Ha Giang province, causing serious damage to people and property. In particular, hundreds of people have been forced to evacuate to safety as cracks and the risk of landslides continue to appear on high hills.

Over the past few days, many areas in Ha Giang province have had heavy to very heavy rain. On National Highway 2, through Nam Buong village (Viet Vinh commune), authorities are continuing to search for the two missing victims and are trying to clear the road. Hundreds of soldiers and equipment have been dispatched to the scene to carry out search and rescue operations. The landslide on National Highway 2 has killed two victims and injured many others.

Earlier, on the morning of September 29, heavy rain caused tens of thousands of cubic meters of rock and soil to slide down National Highway 2. The landslide buried many people, vehicles, and several houses along the road.

About 500m from the landslide site, hundreds of households in Thuong My village (Viet Vinh commune) were forced to evacuate overnight. Currently, people have been taken to cultural houses and schools to ensure safety.

At the hill area at Km54 (through Toi slope, Tan Thanh village, Viet Vinh commune), there are continued signs of landslides. Initially, cracks appeared and then a 1.5m slide occurred. The landslide location is located on the bypass road leading to the landslide area at Km 240+300 - Km 240+450. The authorities have set up barriers and traffic diversions to ensure safety.

As of October 1, landslides and flash floods in Bac Quang district have killed 3 people, left 3 missing and injured 9. Ten houses have collapsed completely, and 15 houses have been damaged from 60 to 80%. 182 households with 716 people have been urgently evacuated from areas at high risk of landslides and currently 51 more households need to be evacuated.

On October 1, speaking with Lao Dong Newspaper reporter, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Quang - Chairman of Viet Vinh Commune People's Committee said that the authorities have mobilized more vehicles to carry out search and rescue.

“Up to now, the whole commune has 4 villages at high risk of landslides, many high hills are cracked. The locality has urgently evacuated people to safe areas,” the leader added.

In addition to Bac Quang district, some areas in Ha Giang province such as Hoang Su Phi and Yen Minh also experienced landslides and flash floods. In addition to human and property damage, landslides also temporarily paralyzed some major roads.

Faced with severe damage caused by flash floods and landslides, the Ministry of National Defence has coordinated with the Ministry of Transport and localities to deploy flycams to scan vulnerable areas at risk of landslides to promptly warn and take preventive measures, evacuate residents, and ensure safety for rescue forces.

Chairman of Ha Giang Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Van Son requested Bac Quang district to implement the "4 on-site" principle in natural disaster prevention. He requested functional forces to make efforts to deploy search and rescue measures, and have a plan to handle unexpected incidents. Localities must ensure safety, evacuate people to safe places, and provide necessities for displaced households to temporarily stabilize their lives.
