The impact of 3 bridges across the Red River on Hanoi traffic

KHÁNH AN |

The implementation of 3 bridges across the Red River (Tran Hung Dao, Ngoc Hoi, Tu Lien) will help reduce traffic pressure in Hanoi's inner city and increase connectivity between areas.

The Hanoi People's Council has just passed a Resolution approving investment policies and adjusting investment policies for a number of public investment projects in the city, including the Tran Hung Dao, Ngoc Hoi and Tu Lien bridge construction projects.

According to the Hanoi People's Committee, in the current period, socio-economic development, specifically developing towards urbanization in the area north of the Red River, still faces many difficulties due to the unfavorable transportation system connecting to the center of Hanoi and neighboring residential areas. Currently, the connection to the core area of the city and neighboring areas is mainly through Thang Long Bridge, the old Duong Bridge running along Ngo Gia Tu Street to Chuong Duong Bridge and Long Bien Bridge or through Nhat Tan Bridge and Vo Nguyen Giap Street.

However, with the rapid urbanization as it is now, these routes are gradually becoming overloaded and no longer meeting the increasing traffic demand.

Tu Lien Bridge, after being invested, will combine with the road from the bridgehead to the Hanoi - Thai Nguyen Expressway to quickly connect the North and Northeast of the Red River, Thai Nguyen province through the Hanoi - Thai Nguyen Expressway to the center of Hanoi City to reduce the load on Chuong Duong, Long Bien, Nhat Tan bridges and Thang Long Bridge. At the same time, gradually complete the transport infrastructure network for the capital Hanoi and develop a modern urban space on both sides of the bridge, promote the urbanization process of the area as a premise for implementing the policy of population expansion and reducing traffic pressure in the city center.

Tu Lien Bridge and the approach roads at both ends of the bridge (from the intersection with Nghi Tam Street to the intersection with Truong Sa Street) with a length of more than 5km. The project is located in Tay Ho, Long Bien districts and Dong Anh district. The project has a total investment of about VND 20,171 billion, with an implementation period of 2025-2027.

Similarly, Tran Hung Dao Bridge is also a key traffic project, helping to connect the central area of Hanoi with the East, contributing to reducing traffic pressure and promoting socio-economic development. Investing in the construction of Tran Hung Dao Bridge will reduce traffic pressure, complete the urban connection network, complete the East - West connection of the City according to the traffic plan of the Capital, facilitate travel between the central area and the developed area of the East of the city.

Investing in the construction of Tran Hung Dao Bridge also promotes the socio-economic development of the eastern area of the city with many new urban areas, commercial centers, service facilities, and works to help increase land value, promote synchronous development between the historic inner city area and the expanded area.

Tran Hung Dao Bridge is about 5.6km long. The starting point is at Tran Hung Dao - Tran Thanh Tong street (Hoan Kiem district), the end point connects with Vu Duc Than street (Long Bien district). The total estimated investment for the construction of Tran Hung Dao bridge is about 15,967 billion VND. The project implementation period is 2025-2027.

Regarding Ngoc Hoi Bridge, the investment in the construction of bridges and bridgehead roads will be completed along Ring Road 3.5 according to the city's traffic development plan; reducing the risk of traffic congestion on existing routes such as Ring Road 3, Liberation Road (QL1A), Road 70...

The investment in construction of Ngoc Hoi Bridge will help increase the connection between Hanoi Capital and Hung Yen Province, creating favorable conditions, connecting new urban areas such as: Ecopark New Urban Area, Dai An Urban Area, Dream City Urban Area... Thereby, creating conditions for socio-economic development in the southern area of the city as well as the southern and southeastern provinces of the Capital Region such as: Hung Yen, Ha Nam, Bac Ninh.

The total length of Ngoc Hoi Bridge (located on Hanoi's Ring Road 3.5) and the approach roads at both ends of the bridge is about 7.5km. Hanoi plans a total investment of about 11,844 billion VND, from the city and central budgets. The project implementation period is from 2025-2030.

The Hanoi People's Council has agreed in principle to report to the Prime Minister for consideration and decision to assign the Hanoi People's Committee as the managing agency to implement the Ngoc Hoi Bridge and the approach roads at both ends of the bridge investment project.
