Top dangerous quarrying profession
According to the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs (DOLISA) of Quang Binh province, in recent years, many work-related accidents have occurred in the province. In 2022, 32 cases occurred, killing 8 people and injuring 24; in 2023, 63 cases occurred, killing 13 people and injuring 8 people.
In the second quarter of 2024 alone, there were 17 accidents, killing 7 people and seriously injuring 7 others. Common accidents include falls from heights (scaffolding, machinery, dangerous terrain, etc.), traffic accidents; rolling, clamping, and rolling by machines and equipment; electric shock, etc., leading to serious injuries, permanent disabilities, and even death.
Currently, the number of workers doing jobs with strict requirements on labor safety and hygiene in the whole province is about 8,500 people; the number of workers doing heavy, toxic and dangerous production jobs is about 14,000 people. The number of workers at high risk mainly works in the fields of construction, mineral exploitation, forest product processing, mechanical repair, electricity, gas and oil trading, etc.
Workplace accidents are a horror for workers, seriously affecting the health and lives of workers, work productivity, and the reputation of businesses. Therefore, efforts in ensuring occupational safety and hygiene are always a task that needs to be focused on by units, businesses, and workers.
In terms of occupational characteristics, according to annual statistics of the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs Inspectorate, stone mining is one of the occupational groups with a very high risk of accidents, the number of occupational accidents and deaths is always at the top.
Create a safe working environment
In recent years, all levels, sectors and the Quang Binh Provincial Federation of Labor have always paid attention to the issue of labor safety. Every year, inter-sectoral units have increased inspection and examination activities for production facilities with many potential and unsafe risks, promptly detecting and correcting errors for the units. Special attention has been paid to training, coaching, and raising awareness of workers and employers, in order to minimize risks that lead to great losses in human life and property.
Vice President of Quang Binh Provincial Federation of Labor Phan Thanh Lan said that enterprises are also required to fully equip necessary equipment, add more modern equipment and machinery, and make efforts to provide more fire prevention and fighting means. At the same time, the most important thing is to raise awareness of workers, reminding and urging workers to implement safety principles is also always emphasized.
Every year, the province launches the Month of Action on Occupational Safety and Hygiene. This year, the Provincial Occupational Safety and Hygiene Council visited and presented gifts worth 15 million VND to 10 workers who had occupational accidents; coordinated inter-sectoral inspections and audits at 13 enterprises.
“During the month, the council also directed trade unions at all levels to maintain self-inspection and assessment of occupational safety and hygiene at 156 enterprises, draw up administrative violation records and impose penalties on 2 units,” said Mr. Lan.
In the second quarter of 2024 alone, the whole province had nearly 360 training courses on occupational safety and hygiene organized by agencies, departments and enterprises; 600 related campaigns and emulation movements were deployed and launched; nearly 800 units and enterprises organized health check-ups for employees with nearly 30,400 people examined...
The grassroots trade unions of enterprises also focus on welfare regimes, shift meals, salary benefits, social insurance, health insurance; promptly support and encourage union members and workers in difficult circumstances.
