Latest storm and low pressure news on January 19th from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Agency (PAGASA) said that a new low pressure is expected to form in the week from January 23rd to January 29th near the Philippines. This low pressure appeared right after Typhoon Nokaen (Philippine name Ada), storm No. 1 of the 2026 storm season.
Philippine weather forecasters said that the new low pressure area formed in the northeastern border area of PAGASA's PAR and TCAD forecast areas is unlikely to strengthen into a storm or tropical depression. However, the new low pressure area is expected to have a wide area of influence and will move towards the Caraga and Eastern Visayas areas of the Philippines during the forecast period.
On January 19, Typhoon Nokaen has degraded to tropical depression Ada. This system is moving northeast, leaving the mainland of Luzon, Philippines.
PAGASA forecasts that tropical depression Ada will move in a east-northeast direction for the next 24 hours before turning east to southeast on the evening of January 20 to January 21.
Philippine weather forecasters noted that the continuous intrusion of dry air from the northeast monsoon is expected to cause this tropical depression to gradually weaken. "This system may be degraded to a low pressure area on January 21, but may still weaken sooner" - the report stated.
Along with the tropical depression, strengthened northeast monsoons also led to strong gusts in coastal and highland areas of Batanes, Babuyan Islands, northern and eastern Cagayan, eastern Isabela, Ilocos Norte, Abra, Polillo Islands, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur and Catanduanes.
