Apple is preparing to enter a new phase in its service business strategy, which is displaying ads on the Apple Maps application. According to Bloomberg, the company plans to deploy this feature from 2026, allowing businesses to pay to display more prominent results in search and recommendations on maps.
This move is seen as an effort by Apple to expand its revenue as the service segment increasingly plays an important role in total revenue. The Apple Maps advertising model is expected to be similar to the App Store Search Ads, where developers pay for their apps to appear first in search results.
The difference is that artificial intelligence (AI) will be integrated to determine the most suitable advertisement for users, based on location, travel habits and potential needs. Apple affirms its goal is to increase the visibility of the ad instead of disrupting the user experience.
However, many people are concerned that adding advertising to Apple Maps could reduce neutrality, which is a factor that has helped the application retain users ahead of rival Google Maps. Although Apple has not announced details, technology experts predict that the advertisement will appear as a "location suggestion" or "project for a business near you" instead of a traditional poster.
Apple Maps was once considered a "weak man" in the digital map race, but has improved significantly in recent years, in terms of data, design and positioning capabilities. The addition of smart advertising can help Apple attract more businesses, while increasing competitiveness in the positioning service segment.
If this plan is implemented in the right direction, Apple can create a model of balancing advertising revenue and user experience, instead of repeating the criticism that Google Maps has faced.
